OVOC Board Election: Candidates needed

(Deadline: Feb. 6, 2015)

Members, we need dedicated individuals like you to keep the chapter vibrant, relevant and forward looking. Without volunteers to run this organization, many of the chapter activities that we take for granted, would not be available. This offers an excellent opportunity for you to shape and participate in the future of OVOC as well as meet and network with industry, government, and academic professionals involved in our program management community.

If you are interested or wish to nominate someone, please contact Colette Martin, Chair, 2015 OVOC Elections Committee, at Elections@pmiovoc.org.

Portfolio Management: A Pulse of the Profession Report

In PMI's Pulse of the Profession In Depth Report on Portfolio Management, PMI found the most successful organizations are going to be the ones that find ways to differentiate themselves. Organizations are increasingly recognizing that portfolio management can help them make the decisions that will set them apart from their competitors. The trend was clear in PMI's 2012 Pulse of the Profession report, based on an annual global study of more than 1,000 project, program and portfolio managers. Over half of the respondents reported frequent use of portfolio management at their organization, an increase of five points from the prior year's survey.

PMI OVOC participation in DECA U Conference

On Jan. 16 to 18, 2015, DECA U held the largest undergraduate business conference in downtown Toronto. PMI OVOC was a proud sponsor of a Project Management Challenge. DECA is an international professional development program where members compete and network with like-minded young professionals in every field of business. It fosters leadership, organizational, and presentation skills to create one's own unique brand and stand out from the rest. DECA U is the collegiate branch of the DECA organization, and encompasses all post-secondary educational institutions.

DECA-U participation was a fantastic experience; and the collaboration across PMI Ontario Chapters was invaluable. Over 1,500 student delegates were there and many left planning to reach out to their local PMI chapters.

Watch for future information about how PMI chapters continue to support DECA events.

Agile project management questions answered, part 1
Automation World
Estimating a software project is always a complex task. Much theory has been developed in an attempt to bring the estimating activity to a quantitative algorithmic approach. However, since the software development process is fundamentally creative, no approach has, in my opinion, actually been shown to produce an estimate sufficiently correct to be more effective than experience. This is especially true in the case of development projects, where the variation occurring among projects can be extremely high.
