PMI OVOC's Annual Business Meeting

May 2nd was PMI OVOC's Annual Business Meeting at the Delta Hotel. This event was an opportunity for OVOC members to not only hear about 2013's great results, but to welcome new board members and thank departing ones. OVOC is thrilled to welcome the OVOC board of directors for 2014 but sad to say goodbye to three long-standing board members: Dan Bailey (Technology), Derek Hughes (President), and Yvan Bastien (Treasurer) have made significant contributions to not only the success of OVOC as a chapter, but also to the recognition of OVOC as a leader within the PMI community. We're sorry to say goodbye, but are happy to report that they will be continuing to support OVOC as volunteers. A complete report of the ABM and introductions to the new board members will be coming to The Leader shortly. Stay tuned!

5 ways to think and act like an effective project manager
Chicago Now
The idea of a project plan is straight-forward enough, but these days we have specialists for every aspect of project management which has left the normal business professional to think that project management is a specialty they either need to learn and know fully themselves, or they must hire such expertise. Neither scenario is very time or budget-friendly. And so they, and their projects, get stuck. Any business professional's work will benefit from thinking like an effective project manager.

Early warning systems are critical
Journal of Commerce
The creation of an early warning system and a smooth flow of information can be critical to most aspects of any organizational operation. A major capital project is no different in this respect. Business IT: A great way to do consulting and project management in-house
TechRepublic
Many IT shops are starting to implement a Business IT (BIT) organization, a group that's familiar in many large companies and increasingly present even in small and medium organizations. BIT is usually oriented toward a business function like supply chain or human resources, and in many ways serves as the internal consulting organizations I've long advocated, providing everything from requirements gathering and project management expertise to vendor selection and strategy.

The art of project management
iGovernment
We need to get familiar with the language and vocabulary of project management to understand it and imbibe it in our professional life. We need to understand the life cycle (birth to close-out) of a project. This includes how a project is conceptualised at the political and senior bureaucratic levels; how it is formulated, planned and organised; as well as how it is implemented, controlled, integrated, delivered upon and closed out. Finally, there is a need to understand how we learn lessons from each project and create knowledge. We need to develop a project mindset.
