Retailers see 11th-hour surge in holiday sales

Retailers are breathing a sigh of relief and celebrating a successful holiday season, thanks to a last-minute surge in sales. Online sales during the final week before Christmas hit $2.8 billion, up 16 percent from last year, according to ComScore, while mall shoppers spent about $44 billion in the week ending Dec. 24, a 14.8 percent increase over the same week in 2010, according to ShopperTrak, which tracks foot traffic at malls and stores. Ron Eigenbrod, 59 — avid adventurer, outdoorsman, gentleman farmer and founder & CEO of Lightstat, Inc. — died suddenly at his New Hartford, Conn., home on Christmas Eve of a heart attack. Born on April 12, 1952 in Hanover, N.H., Mr. Eigenbrod lived the first few years of his life near the farm of his maternal grandparents in Woodstock, Vt., before moving to Suffield, Conn., where he grew up and attended high school. He worked for several years in the energy industry before founding his own company in 1983, Lightstat Inc. in Pleasant Valley, Conn. Lightstat quickly grew to have an influential presence in the energy conservation industry and sold its light-activated temperature control systems to customers internationally. More

Target Corporation has disclosed the locations of its first 24 Canada-based retail locations. The first two-dozen shops will be set up in Ontario. Stores will be opened in March and April 2013, in Toronto, London, Hamilton, Burlington, Guelph, Milton, Brampton, Windsor, Orillia, Mississauga, Fergus, Cambridge, Ajax, Aurora, Waterdown, Kawartha Lakes, and New Market. Dollar General to add more than 6,000 new jobs

Dollar General Corp. plans to add more than 6,000 new jobs this year and open 625 new stores, which includes its first stores in California and Massachusetts. The discounter has benefited during the recession and its aftermath as shoppers continue to seek out bargains for everyday goods. Dollar General said that stores will also open in the 38 states that it already has locations in. The Goodlettsville, Tenn., company also plans to remodel or relocate 550 stores and open a California distribution center. More

Walmart's new store in the Hayden Meadows Retail Center in North Portland, Ore., will feature a 40,600-square-foot ecoroof. Walmart will work with Philadelphia-based Roofmeadow to design the ecoroof. Roofmeadow designed the company's only other ecoroof in the United States on a store in Chicago. More

Barnes & Noble has put Sterling Publishing up for sale, nearly a decade after it bought the publishing house, a person briefed on the matter said. The move was another sign that Barnes & Noble, the nation’s largest bookstore chain, has intensified its focus on the digital side of the book business by shedding other assets. Sterling Publishing, based in New York, has imprints focused on nonfiction, children’s books, crafting, cooking and self-help, among others. More

Retail sales at stores open more than a year may have gained as much as 4.5 percent in December, more than previously estimated, as U.S. shoppers pursued holiday discounts, a trade group said. Same-store sales in December were earlier projected to have advanced as much as 4 percent, the International Council of Shopping Centers said in a statement today. Sales at retail chains rose 5.3 percent from a year earlier, according to the New York-based researcher. More

The Mall of America said it is negotiating leases with at least five retailers to replace the iconic Bloomingdale's store, which is closing after 20 years at the location. The mall also said it will spend $30 million to $50 million on renovations and convert a sub-level storage area into retail and restaurant space. Bloomingdale's, an upscale department store that has operated at the mall since the property opened in 1992, will close in early March and lay off about 127 workers. The pullout was part of a larger move by parent company Macy's Inc. to eliminate stores nationwide that were not performing well. More

Research from mobile marketing and technology firm Nellymoser Inc. found that of more than 700 stores canvassed in the Boston area, 23 contained at least one QR code, a type of two-dimensional bar code. Dunkin’ Brands Group Inc. plans to more than double the reach of its coffee and donut shops in the U.S. over the next 20 years – but the chain is still being cagey about whether and when it'll head to California. Last month, the Canton, Mass.-based company opened its 10,000th Dunkin' Donuts location. That was in Xi'an, China. Macy's Inc. is raising its earnings outlook for the fourth quarter and full year due to a strong holiday season and says it will double its quarterly dividend to 20 cents a share. The retailer is also increasing its share repurchase program by $1 billion.
