Return to the city: Renewal of inner city retail stores
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Times change. Sometimes old ideas become new again. A long time ago I learned that most public transportation converges at a central point – the inner city, writes Walter Loeb, Forbes' major development contributor. In contrast, suburban shoppers have always been dependent on automobiles. They have little choice; with no true town center distances traveled to shopping centers can be great. In the suburbs public transportation is scant and not convenient. More

Is less more for big-box retailers?
Chain Store Age    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Upon first glance, Macy's early January portfolio adjustment announcements appear to be a standard annual strategic repositioning. However, there has been a disproportionate share of coverage and discussion surrounding the well-known retailer's store closings. To figure out if this scrutiny is representative of a net negative for the iconic department store brand, or simply business as usual, Macy’s decision must be analyzed. Taking a closer look at the smallest store scheduled to be shuttered, a 75,000-sq.-ft. Macy’s in Belmont, Mass., and the largest, a 791,000-sq.-ft. location in Houston, Texas, provides some insight into the dynamics behind Macy’s decision-making process. More

The positives of electrolyzed water
Cleaning & Maintenance Management    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Since 1847, when chlorine was first used as a sanitizer, there have been few, if any, alternatives to the useful, moderately effective but often dangerous substances known as chemical cleaners and sanitizers. Today, there is a device that combines three simple things — water, salt and electricity — to create a sanitizer that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports to be 80 times more effective than bleach and sodium hydroxide that can significantly reduce or eliminate the need for soaps and detergents in a variety of custodial operations. Convenience Store total poised to surpass 150,000 units
Chain Store Age    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The latest data from Nielsen shows the number of U.S. convenience stores continues to expand and last year set a new record with 149,220 units. That figures is up 1,094 units from the prior year so the increase amounts to only a 0.7 percent gain, according to the 2013 National Association of Convenience Stores/Nielsen Convenience Industry Store Count. Even so, the growth is noteworthy at a time when overall expansion of selling space in the broader retailer industry has remained stagnant even though the recession officially ended in 2009. More

Tips to preventing an influenza pandemic
CleanLink    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Pandemic flu remains a concern for employers and workers, which is why those in the cleaning industry focus so heavily on prevention. According to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), a pandemic is a global disease outbreak that can occur at any time and can be mild, moderate or severe. An influenza pandemic occurs when a new influenza virus emerges for which there is little or no immunity in the human population; begins to cause serious illness; and then spreads easily person-to-person worldwide. Key and card technology improvements boost door security
FacilitiesNet    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As security and access control continue to climb on the priority lists for institutional and commercial facilities, maintenance and engineering managers are taking a closer look at the way their departments control the use of keys and cards occupants use to enter facilities. Managers are rethinking the specification of these items technicians and occupants use, as well as the process of storing, issuing, and tracking them. By understanding both facility needs and advances in key-control and card-access systems, managers can update their strategies for matching existing technology with security needs. More
