PRSM    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Professional Retail Store Maintenance Association, (PRSM), the authority on retail, multi-site facilities management, launched a new resource designed to help the retail facilities manager evaluate and procure green cleaning agents and equipment and develop processes that create a more environmentally friendly retail store for customers, employees and the planet. The "Retail Facilities Green Cleaning Guide" is a multi-faceted resource for facilities managers who manage cleaning programs, procure cleaning products and contract for cleaning services. Due to increased focus on the health effects of some cleaning agents, green building ratings systems (i.e. LEED) regard green cleaning initiatives as a critical component to today’s comprehensive sustainability program. CleanLink    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A survey of facility managers indicated that while most — 62 percent — believe the cost for water will go up moderately in their communities in years to come, less than 30 percent said costs should go up to encourage conservation and more efficient water use. Retailers report strong sales despite tax hike
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Some of the nation's largest retailers posted solid gains in January even though shoppers were hitting the malls with smaller paychecks. The results offer the first glimpse into how the expiration of the payroll tax cut is affecting household budgets. A worker making $50,000 a year faces a decrease of $1,000 in take-home pay over the course of the year, and economists predicted spending would fall off. But many companies found that shoppers were more resilient than expected. More

The New Yorker    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Since 2003, painter Brendan O'Connell has been inside dozens of Walmarts around the country. It is probably safe to say that he has been in more Walmarts than anyone who doesn't work for the company. Describes an epiphany O’Connell had at a Winn-Dixie while he was a student at Emory University. When he first began visiting Walmarts, he would cruise the aisles as if he were an ordinary shopper, and, whenever he saw something the filled him with wonder, he would take a photograph. The photographs were studies for paintings. More
