Merchants see signs of strength for this year's Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day spending is expected to increase by 10 percent over last year, said Robert Passikoff, president of Brand Keys, a New York City-based brand and customer loyalty consulting firm that conducted a consumer spending survey for the holiday. Beginning with the recession in 2008, many consumers did not give traditional Valentine's Day gifts such as jewelry, flowers, lingerie, and they turned to such lower-priced items as stuffed animals and CDs, Passikoff said. Now there's a shift back to more expensive Valentine's gifts, with a big jump in jewelry purchases, he said. More

Discount shoe retailer DSW Inc. is acquiring chief investor Retail Ventures Inc. in a tax-free stock swap that will pare the ranks of Central Ohio's publicly held companies by one. Columbus-based DSW, headed by retail magnate Jay Schottenstein, said it signed a merger agreement with Retail Ventures, which once owned Filene's Basement and Value City Department Stores before selling them. Big Lots Inc., the Columbus, Ohio- based discount retailer, is exploring a possible sale after receiving interest from buyout firms, said two people with knowledge of the situation. Big Lots, which is working with Goldman Sachs Group Inc. to study strategic options, was approached by Thomas H. Lee Partners LP and Bain Capital LLC, said one person, who declined to be identified because the matter is private. More

Darden donates furnishings to Habitat

Orlando, Fla.-based Darden Restaurants has contributed $500,000 worth of furnishings from 85 of its recently remodeled eateries to Habitat for Humanity International. The furnishings – including artwork, tables, chairs, and booths - will be sold at Habitat for Humanity ReStore resale outlets. The resale outlets sell donated goods to the general public, helping raise money for Habitat's construction of homes for low-income families. More
