The Professional Retail Store Maintenance Association (PRSM) Board of Directors elected its 2011-2012 President Bill Pietrykowski, director of Facilities and Energy Management for GameStop.

Newly-elected Pietrykowski has led the Facilities Department at GameStop through a rapid growth from 500 stores to 5,000, while providing superior response and services to the GameStop stores. He is on the leading edge of energy management and greening of GameStop stores, displaying integrity and high character in his interactions with GameStop personnel and his vendors.

Pietrykowski was awarded PRSM's Retailer of the Year in 2009. He began serving on the association's Board of Directors in 2009 and served as first vice president from 2010-2011.

Pietrykowski will take office at the PRSM2011! National Conference, April 3-5 in Nashville, Tenn.

Retail sales increase for seventh straight month

The U.S. Census Bureau reported that retail sales continue on a positive trend, edging up 0.3 percent for the month of January. The increase to $381.6 billion marked the seventh consecutive month of gains for retail sales. Total sales for the month were above the year-ago period by 7.8 percent. Biggest gainers this month were grocery stores, health and personal care stores and electronics and appliance stores. More

Borders to close 200 stores in bankruptcy

Bookseller Borders, which helped pioneer superstores that put countless mom-and-pop bookshops out of business, filed for bankruptcy protection, sunk by crushing debt and sluggishness in adapting to a rapidly changing industry. The 40-year-old company plans to close about 200 of its 642 stores over the next few weeks. More

Brown Shoe Company Inc. said that it has acquired privately held athletic shoe maker American Sporting Goods Corp. for $145 million. The acquisition broadens the reach of St. Louis-based Brown Shoe, which makes Dr. Scholl's, LifeStride, Franco Sarto and other brands and operates Naturalizer and Famous Footwear stores. Italian eyewear maker Luxottica Group SpA is buying two specialty sunglass retailers in a deal worth about 17 million euros ($23 million) that will give it access to the Mexican market.
