Whole Foods plans to open a health resort

Whole Foods, the natural foods kingpin, is planning an upscale health resort where guests could stay and learn about a healthier lifestyle. "We have the perfect vehicle for this," says Whole Foods co-founder John Mackey, who has not discussed the plan with other media. "Think of it as a center where people would go for a day, a weekend or a week for healthy lifestyle education."

Military shopping gets some private-sector upgrades

The first civilian to run the military's $10 billion-a-year retail business has his work cut out for him. The CEO of the Dallas-based Army & Air Force Exchange Service, Tom Shull, is the first retailer to hold the post, which had been a two-year officer assignment for 117 years. Shull, 61, joined AAFES in June under a 2011 Defense Department "efficiency initiatives" program, and his tenure doesn't have a time limit. After his hiring was written up in Military Times, many of the reader comments were critical, touching on everything from AAFES' size availability to prices.

Francesca's plans to open 80 locations in 2013, stock climbs after hours

Francesca's Holdings Corp.'s shares jumped in after-hours trading after the Houston women's fashion retailer reported surging fourth-quarter profits and revenue. The company’s adjusted earnings per share were 33 cents in the three months ended Feb. 2, up from 20 cents a year earlier, the company said in a statement, while revenue was up 40 percent.

Starbucks to buy Costa Rican coffee farm

Starbucks plans to buy its first coffee farm, a nearly 600-acre estate on the slopes of the Poas Volcano in Costa Rica, the chain said. It plans to convert the farm to an agronomy research and development center working on climate change mitigation, long-term crop stability and other programs. It did not disclose terms of the deal, which is expected to close in May.

Zumiez Q4 profit up 22 percent; 60 new stores planned for 2013

Zumiez Inc. said its fiscal fourth quarter net income rose 22.1 percent to $22.9 million on improved sales. Zumiez said it plans to open about 60 new stores in the current fiscal year, including up to 10 stores in Canada and six stores in Europe.

H&M has plans to dominate US retail market
Swedish retailer, H&M, is planning a U.S take over, of sorts. According to WWD, "the fast-fashion giant unveiled 40 U.S. stores last year and wants to surpass that number in 2013." Although H&M U.S president, Daniel Kulle, is keeping mum about the exact number of projected stores, he did reveal 10 new location, which includes the Roosevelt Collection in Chicago; Union Station and The Shops at Georgetown Park in Washington; the French Quarter in New Orleans; City Place in West Palm Beach, Fla., and the Waikiki Business Plaza in Honolulu.

Williams-Sonoma reported that fourth-quarter EPS grew 15 percent to $1.34 and that quarterly revenue grew to $1.406 billion versus $1.268 billion in 2011 with comparable brand revenue growth of 4 eprcent.
