Better days here? Economic rebound gains strength

Shoppers and businesses are feeling better about the recovery. That was the encouraging message from a trio of economic reports — and from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, who told lawmakers that the country's modest rebound is sustainable. Retail spending rose sharply in March. Consumer inflation remained all but invisible. And businesses boosted their stockpiles in anticipation of higher shopper demand. The improving economy also lifted first-quarter earnings at JPMorgan Chase & Co. That was the latest sign that the biggest banks are gradually putting the financial crisis behind them. More

Kohl's to use solar power at 10 stores in Colorado

Mid-level retailer Kohl's Inc. will convert nearly half of its stores in Colorado to solar power by the end of the year. Solar installations are under way or complete at four stores in Colorado and six more stores should have construction starting in coming months. In all, 10 of the company's 23 stores in Colorado will have solar power. Each store will have more than 530 solar panels that will make about 15 percent of the store's energy. More

Wal-Mart plans India 'big box' store drive

Giant retailer Wal-Mart says it will launch more "big box" wholesale outlets in India as it hopes for a government green light that would fully open up the vast retail sector to foreign players. Wal-Mart opened its second wholesale store in Chandigarh in the northern Punjab state after entering the Indian retail market last May as part of an international expansion. It plans to open at least 10 more wholesale stores in the next three to four years, Scott Price, Asia chief executive of U.S.-based Wal-Mart. More

Limited Brands announced plans to build its presence in Canada and the Middle East. The retailer said it is creating Limited Brands Canada, a Montreal-based company that will support all Limited Brands retail stores and strategic expansion in Canada, including La Senza, Bath and Body Works, Victoria's Secret Pink and Victoria's Secret (launching later this year). In addition to her current role as president of La Senza, Joanne Nemeroff has been named president of Limited Brands Canada. More

Jos. A. Bank Clothiers Inc. plans to open five new factory stores in 2010, and as many as 75 total in future years. The high-end Hampstead, Md.-based men's retailer said it aims to reach a different customer base with the factory stores than what it typically attracts to regular stores. More

Simon offers to invest $2.5 billion in General Growth

Simon Property Group Inc. made a new offer for rival General Growth Properties Inc., pledging to invest $2.5 billion in reorganization and match the terms of a bankruptcy exit plan led by Brookfield Asset Management Inc. The proposal includes a $1 billion co-investment commitment by hedge fund Paulson & Co., Indianapolis-based Simon said in a statement. More

Chicago strip mall vacancies hit 30-year high

Chicago strip malls are emptier than they've been in at least 30 years, and they're likely to get even emptier. The vacancy rate at area shopping centers has climbed for three straight years to 11.8 percent, the highest since at least 1980, when real estate research firm Reis Inc. began tracking the data. Properties tracked include small centers and larger ones anchored by supermarkets or national discount chains. More

D.C. area retail market strongest in nation, in spite of higher vacancies

Statistics show the Washington area's retail market is the strongest in the nation despite increases in this region's retail vacancy rate since last year. The area vacancy rate for shopping centers in the first quarter of 2010 was 5.7 percent, up 1.1 percent from the same period in 2009, according to a report released by Alexandria-based Delta Associates. That number was significantly lower than the national average of 9.5 percent. More
