Malls face difficult test of balancing safety and access
The Globe and Mail    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The deadly shooting at Toronto's Eaton Centre on June 2 brought home just how difficult that balancing act can be. Rising levels of violence and threats of terrorism have forced some malls, particularly in the United States, to introduce drastic measures such as restricting access by teenagers, banning certain types of clothing and using undercover officers specially trained in detecting trouble-makers. But shopping malls can only go so far. More

The Globe and Mail    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

In a landmark building in Chicago's downtown Loop, Target is putting the final touches on what's arguably its most radical experiment since bringing designer goods to the masses 15 years ago. In late July a new kind of Target — prosaically named City — will open on South State Street, just down the block from a Macy's and across the street from a Forever 21. City stores, which are two-thirds the size of typical Target big boxes and may shrink further, will also open this year in Los Angeles, Seattle, and San Francisco. More

Enter the maze: Ikea, Costco, other retailers know how to get you to buy more
The National Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Persuading a customer to buy is the holy grail of retail. It may be the lighting, or an artificial scent introduced to put people in a particular mood to purchase a particular product. At a time when retail experts are capitalizing on mobile apps and digital technology — when researchers are, for example, toying with the idea of attaching GPS trackers to shopping carts so witting customers can build personal shopping profiles and receive customized discounts — retailers are also finding new, less visible ways to tweak browsers into buyers, and buyers into even bigger spenders.
