OSHA Hazard Communication Standard revised

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) revised its Hazard Communication Standard, and employers should be aware of crucial changes and compliance dates. The final rule on the standard was issued on March 26 and became effective on May 25. The Hazard Communication Standard, which has been revised to align with the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals, will be fully implemented in 2016. The standard aims to benefit workers by reducing confusion about chemical hazards in the workplace, facilitating safety training, and improving understanding of hazards, especially for low literacy workers. Connected Stores form the heart of Best Buy's strategy to reduce its square footage in favor of smaller stores that emphasize high-end service. Best Buy plans to close 50 big boxes across the country by the end of the year and open 100 smaller-format Best Buy Mobile and 50 Connected stores. The scaled-down concepts typically range from 30,000 to 45,000 square feet compared with 58,000 square feet for the traditional big box. More

With the influence of the mobile web on store sales projected to more than triple by 2016, according to a recent report by research and consulting firm Deloitte, retailers today have to decide how they’re going to interact with consumers who use their smartphones to help them shop. Walgreens expands presence in Mid-South with acquisition

Walgreens will acquire 144 stores operating under USA Drug, Super D Drug, May's Drug, Med-X and Drug Warehouse banners in an agreement valued at approximately $438 million. Walgreens will acquired the stores, which are located in Arkansas, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, Oklahoma and Tennessee as well as corporate offices, a distribution center located in Pine Bluff, Ark., and a wholesale and private-brand business from Stephen L. LaFrance Holdings and members of the LaFrance family. More

Sears Canada invests in energy management software to cut emissions by 20 percent

The retailer has already achieved a 17 percent reduction at the end of 2011. Sears Canada will deploy CloudApps' Sustainability Suite across its store portfolio, including 122 full-line stores, 48 Sears Home stores and 11 outlet stores. CloudApps said it will capture carbon, energy and waste data from the sites, encouraging site managers to be responsible for reducing usage. More

Target Corp. and Walmart Stores Inc. plan to hire tens of thousands of workers in Canada over the next two years, increasing pressure on domestic retailers from Sears Canada Inc. to Canadian Tire Corp Ltd. Target, the second-largest U.S. discount retailer, will hire as many as 27,000 people in Canada next year for its first stores in the country, while Wal-Mart said it plans to add 4,000 employees this year, about 500 more than it initially forecast.
