The Professional Retail Store Maintenance Association (PRSM), the authority on retail, multi-site facilities management introduced a comprehensive sustainability-focused resource center, within, to help retailers improve their ongoing green efforts or get started with a customized plan designed for their specific needs. PRSM’s Sustainability Resource Center, the online product of a working group of member professionals from across the Retail FM industry, went live with its first release — a "Waste and Recycling" module designed to empower Facilities Managers to take control of waste and recycling programs, in turn putting them in leadership roles regarding sustainable best-practices. GE Lighting rolls out new lighting program at 7,000 Walgreens

Walgreens recently upgraded its general lighting across 80 percent of the chain's nationwide locations, through a partnership with GE Lighting. As part of its new lighting initiative, Walgreens said it has changed its lights to the new GE F25 T8 linear fluorescent tubes, which is designed to save thousands of dollars as it impacts more than 4.3 million lights at nearly 7,000 stores. U.S. discount retailer Target confirmed its plans to begin opening at least 125 stores in Canada beginning in the spring. In a release from its Minneapolis headquarters, the company said the store openings across Canada would begin in March and continue through 2014. More

Topshop is coming to Nordstrom

Nordstrom, the conservative Seattle-based department store, is bringing in Topshop, the British fast-fashion chain with rock 'n' roll flair. Topshop, along with the men’s brand, Topman, will be introduced to Nordstrom stores in September and sold through, the companies said. Topshop, which sells pieces inspired by runway trends and street fashion, is expected to add some freshness to Nordstrom, which has lacked a brand with such quick runway-to-retail turnaround. More

A national retail chain's commitment to join what will be the largest outlet shopping center in the state has placed the project in Pearl closer to fruition, officials say. Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH, the national retailer's outlet chain, has signed on to a 20,000-square-foot space to anchor The Outlets at Bloomfield in Pearl, Miss., the project's development firm, Spectrum Capital, announced. Marvin Traub, a merchant prince and former CEO of Bloomingdale's, who transformed the department store chain into an international powerhouse, died at his home in Manhattan on July 11. He was 87. The cause was bladder cancer, according to Mortimer Singer, president of Marvin Traub Associates Inc., a consulting firm that Traub started in 1992. He had been battling the illness since late 2009. More

Supervalu Inc. is shopping a new loan and paving the way to refinance up to $2.5 billion of debt, according to a person familiar with the offering, a day after the supermarket operator said it had put itself on the auction block amid an effort to maintain profitability. The retailer began gauging investor interest in a new $850 million term loan and put in motion plans for a new $1.65 billion revolving credit line, both of which are expected to give it more wiggle room with expenses. More

Microsoft to reach 44 retail store total by mid-2013

Microsoft will have 44 retail stores in place by the end of its fiscal 2013, which means by the end of June 2013, officials said. A year ago, Microsoft officials said that Microsoft planned to open 75 new Microsoft Stores in the subsequent two to three years. Microsoft Stores sell Windows PCs, Windows Phones, Microsoft and third-party software, games, peripherals and more. More
