Retailers' idea: Think smaller in urban push
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With little room to expand in the suburbs, retailers, including Office Depot, Wal-Mart and Target, are betting that opening small city stores will help their growth. It is a significant shift from their approach in the past, when they tried to cram their big-box formats into cities, often prompting big fights. This time, the retailers studied city dwellers with anthropological intensity and overhauled things as varied as store sizes (the city stores are a small fraction of the size of the suburban ones), packages (they must be compact enough for pedestrians) and signs (they are simple, so shoppers can get in and out within minutes). Canada retail sales data keep growth hopes alive
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Canadian retail sales rose by a weaker-than-expected 0.3 percent in May, but a healthy jump in sales volume and heavy shopping for food, beverages and clothing ignited hopes that consumers would help keep the economy out of the doldrums. The robust sales in supermarkets, general merchandise and clothing stores offset a drop in auto and gasoline sales, Statistics Canada data showed. Six of 11 subsectors tracked by the agency reported gains, representing 53 percent of total retail trade. More

Association of California Recycling Industries    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Introduced on Feb. 10, 2011, AB 341 would make some notable changes to California law. Currently, businesses are not directly subject to the requirements of the Integrated Waste Management Act of 1989 (AB 939, Sher) to divert waste from landfills. AB 341 would change that by, among other things, requiring businesses to recycle. More

Safe Chemicals Act approved By Senate committee
CleanLink    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Legislation proposing federal approval of chemicals has passed the Senate's Environment and Public Works Committee. If this Safe Chemicals Act is passed by the full legislature, it would update the 35-year-old Toxic Substances Control Act and would require manufacturers to prove their chemicals are safe before being allowed to use them, instead of requiring that the chemicals have to be proven harmful before they can be banned. Whole Foods quarterly sales hold up, shares soar
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Whole Foods Market Inc. reported quarterly profit that topped Wall Street's view after sales at established stores defied the softening U.S. economy, sending the upscale grocer's shares surging 11.5 percent in an after-hours relief rally. Investors had worried that Whole Foods' industry-leading same-store sales would cool, especially after top-performing restaurant chain Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. flagged decelerating growth at its restaurants open at least 13 months.
