Kohl's is Among Few August Standouts

Retailers turned in their best performance in nearly a year in August - a 2 percent decline in same-store sales - leading some to suggest that a turnaround is near for the recession-battered industry. Kohl's Corp. stood out among its peers, beating analysts' expectations for August by reporting a gain of 0.2 percent in same-store sales for the four-weeks ended Aug. 29. Urban Outfitters Up as 3Q Sales Outlook Pleases Investors

Shares of Urban Outfitters Inc. climbed more than 7 percent after the teen-clothing retailer said its fiscal third-quarter comparable-store sales to date are consistent with the more moderate declines seen in the prior period. Toys 'R' Us Buys KB Toys' Brand

Retailer Toys "R" Us Inc. said it acquired the KB Toys' brand, including its Web site, trademarks and intellectual property rights. KB Toys, which filed for bankruptcy in December, sold its logos and online addresses in a bankruptcy auction last month for $2.1 million to CE Stores, a unit of Toys "R" Us. The acquisition doesn't include KB Toys' 460 stores, which were closed and liquidated earlier this year following its bankruptcy filing. More    E-mail article
