Merchants reroute in anticipation of union strike
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Must-have items for the holiday shopping season could be delayed coming to store shelves if the threat of a strike by the International Longshoremen's Association becomes a reality when the union's contract expires Sept. 30. Some merchants have already acted on backup plans in anticipation of negotiations between the ILA and managing group United States Maritime Alliance failing to produce an agreement, says Jon Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy for the National Retail Federation. A strike would hit retailers during peak holiday shipping season. More

American retailers face challenges in expanding to Canada
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Nordstrom and Target are about to open stores in Canada, J. Crew and Tory Burch just did so, and Ann Taylor and Kate Spade are scouting locations. American retailers extending their reach northward seems like the most obvious of moves. But until recently, the Canadian market was hard to crack for many companies. The Canadian dollar was weak, costs were higher, and with limited real estate development, it was difficult to find space. More

How the entry of Walmart and big retail chains will change India
TIME    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Has Manmohan Singh got his mojo back? The Indian Prime Minister has recently suffered the indignity of being called 'overwhelmed and out of steam' in the Indian magazine Caravan; a "dithering, ineffectual bureaucrat" by The Washington Post; and an "underachiever" on the cover of TIME. And yet, there he was on Sept. 14, boldly pushing a major economic reform that would open up India's vast retail market to greater participation by foreign companies. Singh tried the same move last fall, only to be shouted down by populists within his coalition, who threatened to bring down the government, claiming that the measure would threaten the livelihood of small shopkeepers. Unable to make his case, Singh backed down. This time, he all but dared them to call his bluff. Who's dithering now? More

Stores achieve success by design
RetailWire    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Back in February, Matt Shay, president of the National Retail Federation, said, "2012 is all about the customer." Shay's comments came out of findings from the Benchmarks for 2011, Forecasts for 2012 report by the NRF Foundation and KPMG LLP, which discovered a renewed commitment by merchants to engage shoppers through a variety of customer-centric initiatives. While much of the report focused on capturing opportunities across a variety of sales channels using digital tools, it is also clear that technology combined with store layout and design can have a profound effect on merchants' top and bottom lines. The Associated Press via The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A $400 million makeover is giving New York's iconic Macy's store a sleek, new 21st-century style. And some preservationists aren't happy about it. They see the overhaul of America's biggest department store as scrapping classic Beaux Arts and Art Deco touches in favor of the latest trend in retail design — something like an Apple computer store.
