Toys 'R Us CEO: Why brick-and-mortar stores will trump online in end
CNBC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Even as more retail purchases are made online, it is the brick-and-mortar stores that will win out in the end, said Toys ’R Us Chairman Jerry Storch. "The world is evolving," Storch said during an interview with CNBC's Squawk Box. "The Internet is transformational, but it's not just the exclusive playground of Internet-only companies," he said. "In fact, it's the stores that are going to win in the end because of the physicality. Everything that's going on the Internet is about mobile and about physical, the ability to see what's going on in my neighborhood and act on it immediately." More

Getting Satisfaction
Stores    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A recently published analysis of the reputations of leading retailers found that Target is tops for reputation, but Walmart takes the ribbon for overall satisfaction. Using published data compiled from approximately 15 sources, communications consultancy Dix & Eaton identified eight critical value drivers – including satisfaction, problem resolution, price/value and trust -- then ranked the top 10 U.S. general merchandising retailers. While the analysis found a cluster of retailers consistently rose to the top, no single merchandiser took the top spot in every category. More

The Associated Press via Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The International Council of Shopping Centers is forecasting a 3 percent sales increase for this year's traditional November-December holiday period, compared with last year. That would be less than the 3.3 percent pace seen during the holiday 2011 period and the 3.8 percent gain for the holiday 2010 season, according to the mall trade group. But the pace would be much higher than the 1.3 percent average seen since 2007. More

to Michigan, US

Detroit Free Press    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Holly Rockbrune is one of a growing number of Canadians making overnight shopping trips to the U.S. this year, giving retailers in border cities such as Detroit an early Christmas present. The increase has been triggered by a strong Canadian dollar and significantly higher duty-free limits that went into effect in June. Under the new law, the value of merchandise that Canadians can bring home tax-free from the U.S. has doubled or quadrupled, depending on how long they stay in the U.S. More

Canada retail sales jump, but Q3 growth still seen slow
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Canadian retail sales jumped by an unexpectedly large 0.7 percent in July from June but that might have been the only spark in an otherwise sluggish third-quarter economic performance so far, analysts said. Strip mall owners see revival in US
NASDAQ    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Strip mall owners are dusting off projects that were shelved during the economic downturn, thanks partly to the expansion of discount chains like Wal-Mart, Target and Family Dollar. Until recently, development has been sluggish in the retail sector, which has faced persistently high vacancy rates because of competition from Internet shopping and overbuilding during the boom years. Only five million square feet of new retail space was developed over the past 12 months nationwide, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers. More

Average annual spending rose to$49,705, the first yearly increase since 2008, the height of the Great Recession. But hold off on popping the champagne … when you take inflation into account, spending hardly budged at all. Inflation increased 3.2 percent last year. More
