Retailers say sales slowed in September
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Retail sales growth slowed in September among 19 major American retailers, dragged down by a big decline in prescription sales at Walgreens drugstores. Sales at stores open at least a year crept up 0.8 percent from September 2011, according to the 19 retailers tracked by Thomson Reuters. However, excluding Walgreens and Rite Aid, the other drugstore chain that reports monthly sales, same-store sales rose 3.6 percent, which was in line with analysts’ expectations. More

Retail landlords: Malls doing well despite online sales
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In spite of the rapid rise in online sales that have hurt a number of national retailers, the biggest shopping-mall companies are doing quite well, thank you. That was the counterintuitive message delivered by several chief executives of leading retail property owners at International Strategy & Investment's real estate conference. ISI, an investment research firm, held its annual conference at the St. Regis Hotel in Manhattan, N.Y. The CEOs argued that, despite challenges facing individual retailers, many real estate investment trusts that own retail property are posting occupancy of 90 percent or more and annual gains in lease rates. Collaboration nation: Upscale designers + retailers = shopping frenzy
The Vancouver Sun    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In 2004, Karl Lagerfeld launched a collection of clothing with H&M — and so began an era of collaborations, designer name-lending, and diffusion lines. Sure, Lagerfeld later told a German magazine he would never work with H&M again, saying he was embarrassed by how insufficient quantities of his collection were produced and, more inflammatory, offended by the fact that the clothing was produced in larger sizes than he had envisaged ("What I designed was fashion for slender and slim people," he said). But the trend caught on, and, eight years later, not a season passes without a new collaboration. Here are some we noted for this season. More

Confident consumer: Apps aid shopping
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Even the most low-tech shopper would have to be impressed with some of the utility packed into shopping apps these days. Eyeona, for example, not only saves your receipts, it tracks prices after your purchase to see if there are price drops. You can also create a list of products you might like to buy so you can be notified if the price goes down. Dan Butler, vice president of retail operations at the National Retail Federation, says most retailers will refund the difference between the price paid and a sale price for a week to 10 days after the purchase but warns, "Not for the remaining life of the product."
