As retailers begin to trickle back to shopping centers across the country, new data suggests that the regional malls, the largest destinations for shoppers, are doing a little better than smaller shopping centers. A report from SNL Real Estate found that the vacancy rates are declining for regional malls. SNL, using information compiled by commercial real estate information service Reis Inc., found that the vacancy rate declined in the third quarter, to 8.7 percent from 8.9 percent in the second quarter. In its annual meeting with analysts, Walmart Stores U.S. president Bill Simon said the retailer would accelerate small-store growth to compete with dollar stores and drug stores, and announced plans to have 500 Neighborhood Market stores and 12 Express stores by fiscal 2016. "This gives us the opportunity to build more stores for less money," Simon said. Walmart currently operates 217 Neighborhood Markets and 10 Express stores. More

A group of retailers and trade groups has launched a last-ditch effort to stop a proposed multibillion-dollar settlement that Visa Inc., MasterCard Inc. and major banks have agreed to pay retailers for alleged fee fixing. Ten out of the 19 retailers and trade groups that are parties to the class-action lawsuit against the credit card companies say they're trying to block the deal because they believe it would allow the credit card industry to continue to take advantage of merchants and their customers while stopping competition. Costco profit rises on higher membership fees

Costco Wholesale Corp. posted a higher-than-expected quarterly profit after the U.S. warehouse retailer raised membership fees. Costco, which has millions of members who pay annual fees to shop at its giant stores, earned $609 million, or $1.39 per share in the fiscal fourth quarter ended Sept. 2, compared with $478 million, or $1.08 per share, a year earlier. Starbucks Corp. Chief Executive Officer Howard Schultz said his company plans to add 1,000 stores in the U.S. in the next five years. The locations, which will employ about 20 workers each, could add a total of 20,000 jobs, Schultz said in an interview in Houston.
