Americans snapped up goods from cars to iPhones in September at a faster pace than forecast by economists, showing consumer demand was heading into the year- end holidays on a high note. The 1.1 percent advance followed a revised 1.2 percent increase in August, the best back-to-back showing since late 2010, Commerce Department figures showed today in Washington. The median forecast of 77 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a 0.8 percent rise. More

Hoffman, a former federal environmental official whose innovative program to identify and reward energy-efficient practices became the Energy Star program, a voluntary international rating system for “green” products, died Sept. 24 at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He was 62 and a Washington resident. He had complications after surgery for a perforated peptic ulcer, said his wife, Lucinda McConathy. More

Walmart said it will add $150 million in benefits to its bottom line from sustainability initiatives such as solar and wind energy projects, fuel cell installations, and its zero waste program in fiscal year 2013. 7-Eleven Inc. has announced two acquisitions, expanding its U.S. store portfolio. The company has closed deals with EZ Energy USA, Inc. to purchase 67 retail locations in the Cleveland and Pittsburgh, Pa., markets and with its licensee, Handee Marts Inc., to acquire 58 7-Eleven convenience stores in those same markets, as well as locations in northern West Virginia and western Maryland. Terms of the deals were not disclosed. More

Kroger Co. is forecasting stronger growth in the years ahead, with company executives outlining plans to expand in new and existing markets. The nation's largest traditional supermarket operator said yesterday that the growth will be driven in part by new store formats. Over the long term, Kroger now expects earnings per share to grow 8 to 11 percent, up from the previous forecast of 6 to 8 percent. The company stood by its sales and earnings guidance for the current year. More
