Wal-Mart Stores Inc. plans to open 100 more stores in China and create 18,000 jobs there over the next three years in a bid to boost its presence in China's booming but highly competitive hypermarket sector. Wal-Mart, which has 370 stores and over 100,000 employees in China, was a pioneer in the market, but now faces much greater competition from Britain's Tesco Plc. , Germany's Metro AG, France's Carrefour and domestic firms, as well as a slowing economy. Aeropostale recently unveiled its brand new prototype store that's supposed to propel the brand into the future. The teen retailer's goal is to spark an "emotional connection" with consumers, reports Sharon Edelman at Women's Wear Daily. It's pretty high-tech too. There are iPods in fitting rooms so that people can personalize the music while they're trying things on. Apple desktops and iPads are throughout the store for customers to use to scan products and see reviews. The iPads have a build-your-own-outfit guide too. More

Survey: Shoppers to boost holiday spending, hunt for deals

Holiday shoppers will be spending a little more this year, but they'll be disciplined and won't hesitate to go online for better deals, according to an annual Accenture consumer survey. Consumers expect to spend an average of $582 on holiday shopping, the survey found, and nearly 25 percent of shoppers plan to drop more than $750. About half of those surveyed expect to increase their spending by $250 or more from last year. But most shoppers remain careful, with only 8 percent indicating they would "splurge." More

More shoppers buy groceries in dollar stores

Most dollar store chains have been increasing their grocery offerings in the past few years in the hope of stealing shoppers away from supermarkets and the move seems to be paying off. Supermarket News reports that the percentage of shoppers who have bought groceries at dollar stores has grown three percentage points in the last 12 months, to 35 percent from 32 percent. More
