US consumer confidence rose in October from 7-month low

Confidence among U.S. consumers rose in October from a seven-month low, while measures of labor market sentiment showed the biggest part of the economy will have trouble accelerating. The Conference Board’s confidence index increased to 50.2 from a revised 48.6 in September, figures from the New York- based research group showed today. The proportion of people who said jobs were plentiful fell to the lowest level this year and income expectations were the weakest since April 2009. More

Ann Taylor expanding outlet store business

Women's clothing retailer Ann Taylor Stores Corp said it is planning to significantly ramp up its outlets business by opening 40 new stores next year at locations previously occupied by rival Liz Claiborne Inc. Ann Taylor, which operates a chain of namesake stores and the more casual, less expensive LOFT chain, is planning to open about 35 LOFT outlets and five Ann Taylor Factory stores in the second quarter of its fiscal year 2011, a period that will end in July 2011. Gordon plans to bring Urban Brands chain out of bankruptcy with 175 stores

An affiliate of Gordon Brothers Group LLC, the store liquidation specialist, will bring Urban Brands Inc. out of bankruptcy, saving at least 175 of the chain's 210 stores, lawyers for the two companies said. GB Merchant Partners, the unit, won an auction for the company, which operates under the Ashley Stewart brand and calls itself "the premier fashion retailer for the plus- size urban woman." GB Merchant will pay $15.7 in cash and assume some liabilities, company attorney Mark D. Collins said in court. More

Rental video chain Movie Gallery is selling off its store brands Hollywood Video, Movie Gallery and Game Crazy as part of its bankruptcy proceedings. A federal bankruptcy judge in Richmond, Va., approved an auction for its brand names, Internet domain names and customer databases. The auction being handled by advisory firm Streambank is set for Nov. 9. More

Neiman Marcus may be known as a place for Texas-size yearnings and price tags, but in a sign of the economic times for luxury retailers, the company is being drawn to a less haughty shopper.The retailer, based in Dallas, is preparing to open a new line of outlet stores this fall called Last Call Studio, which will sell clothes that have never passed through a Neiman Marcus or even the retailer's existing chain of Last Call outlet stores. Mall developers look to outlet centers as new avenue for growth

As opportunities for new retail development have dwindled in recent years, REITs that have traditionally specialized in building regional malls started to look into building outlet centers. The latest firm to move into the sector is CBL & Associates Properties Inc., a Chattanooga, Tenn.-based regional mall operator, which announced it had entered into a joint venture with Horizon Group Properties to build an outlet center in Oklahoma City, Okla.
