Target announced its commitment to working with its vendors on the elimination of sow gestation crates by 2022. When it comes to looking at retail crime by the numbers, the statistics are staggering. Shrink – the loss of inventory due to employee theft, shoplifting, paperwork errors, or supplier fraud – cost retailers more than $34 billion in 2011, or more than 1.4 percent of their total sales, with shoplifting accounting for 35 percent of those losses alone. And it's not just petty shoplifting incidents that are heightening retailers' awareness of these crimes. Organized retail crime is also on the rise. NRF's latest survey on the issue found that nearly all retailers surveyed had been the victim of ORC in the past year. More

Rite Aid Corp. said that Hurricane Sandy substantially damaged eight of its stores and it expects the storm will hurt comparable sales in November, after boosting some sales late in the month as shoppers planned ahead. As of Oct. 31, 188 Rite Aid drugstores were either closed or operating with no power. At the height of the storm on Monday night, 790 Rite Aid stores were closed. More
