Oh, good. We weren't sure exactly how we were going to gain those 10 holiday pounds this year, and we hate uncertainty. It's a good thing we found out about the pumpple cake. The pumpple cake is pumpkin pie and apple pie baked into chocolate and vanilla cake, respectively. The whole thing is then stuck together with buttercream frosting. Wintergreen, licorice, cherry, ginger, vanilla and nutmeg are among the most prevalent notes, and they make root beer a worthy flavor component for cooking and baking. At the local Firehook Bakery chain, Kate Jansen, part-owner and head of product development, was looking to create items that could be promoted for national holidays when she added root-beer-flavored baked goods to the repertoire. Gold Crust Baking Company, a family-owned wholesale bakery specializing in breads and rolls, is relocating its operations from Alexandria, Va. to Landover, Md. The company, which has been in operation since 2000 and manufactures more than 20 million pounds of dough per year for hotels, restaurants and catering companies in the Mid-Atlantic region, will initially create up to 60 new jobs in Maryland, with plans to expand its frozen product line and create another 50 new jobs over the next three to five years. Elizabeth Ellison hopes her upcoming business is the icing on the cupcake for the Blue Dome district's growing array of restaurants. "Our definition of cupcakes is a little different from others'," said Ellison, of her Hi, Cupcake shop. "We make anything you can fit into a cupcake pan." In addition to traditional high-end cupcakes with gourmet ingredients, she plans to bake savory cupcakes with bacon and cheese as well as cupcake-size quiches. Hi, Cupcake will also make gluten-free cupcakes, vegan specialties and use locally sourced ingredients. More

Oprah Winfrey's favorite chicken pies occupied a place of honor in Boston last week, as the Centerville Pie Co.'s signature item was featured at the opening reception of a new seasonal Harry & David store on Newbury Street. The chicken pies will be available this winter both from the Harry & David catalog and in the Boston store, an arrangement forged by Winfrey and announced live — much to the shock of Broadley and partner Laurie Bowen — on the media mogul's talk show in September. Feast your eyes on Junior's newest cheesecake. The famed Brooklyn eatery celebrated its 60th anniversary Tuesday by adding a new menu item that beat out more than 500 other sweet recipes in a contest. Suzanne Banfield of Basking Ridge, N.J., took the cake with her Joyful Almond Cheesecake, earning $1,800 and a chance to see her dessert featured on Junior's menu. The winning cake evokes her favorite childhood candy bar, Almond Joy, and is made from layers of coconut and almond-infused sponge cake, a traditional cheesecake and chocolate ganache. More

The Angel Wings Bakery in Old Town Spring, Texas, kicked off their "Our Balls Save Boobs" campaign this month to help raise money for breast cancer research. Its new campaign will raise money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation. By purchasing a breast cancer awareness cake ball from the bakery for $2, Angel Wings will donate $1 of that purchase to the Komen foundation. More
