Top DoD reserve official stepping down

A top Defense Department official who has been pushing to reshape the military's reserve components is stepping down. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs Dennis McCarthy announced his retirement in an email to his Pentagon colleagues. McCarthy's resignation comes shortly after he co-authored a long-term proposal to dramatically expand the role of the military's 1.2 million reservists. More

Pentagon finally kills second engine for advanced warplane

The Pentagon is canceling a controversial program to develop an alternate engine for its next-generation F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, putting an end to one of Washington's longest-running and most-divisive contracting battles. In a terse statement, the Defense Department said it notified General Electric and Rolls-Royce that it is formally terminating their joint bid to develop a second engine for the advanced warplane. The Pentagon said that the two companies had also "been instructed to preserve and deliver government property" back to the military. More

The military health plan's new online features expand the website's "Blue Button" capability, which already allowed beneficiaries to safely and securely access and print or save their demographic information, allergy and medication profiles, officials said. Petty Officer 2nd Class Vu Phung scored among the top 2 percent of sailors in his rank on his advancement test, yet those results weren't good enough to get him promoted. Out of 1,307 sailors in his operations specialist job who took the test last fall, only 22 were promoted to E-6. This week the Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard, announced a decrease in activated reservists, while the Army and Navy announced an increase. The net collective result is 386 more reservists activated than last week. At any given time, services may activate some units and individuals while deactivating others, making it possible for these figures to either increase or decrease. More
