President Barack Obama has signed a bill that aims to keep severely wounded Iraq and Afghanistan veterans in their homes by providing billions of dollars in support to family members who care for them. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates used the occasion of the 65th Anniversary of the Victory in Europe to declare war on duplicative overhead, bloat and needless spending in the Defense Department. In a speech at the Eisenhower Library, Gates called for a reduction in overhead for the department, and said he wants the department to take a hard, realistic look at what defense capabilities America really needs in the 21st Century. National Guard (In Federal Status) and Reserve Activated as of May 4, 2010

This week the Army, Navy and Coast Guard announced a decrease in activated reservists, while the Air Force and Marine Corps announced an increase. The net collective result is 956 fewer reservists activated than last week. At any given time, services may activate some units and individuals while deactivating others, making it possible for these figures to either increase or decrease. More
