Congress to vote on military gay ban

Congress neared precedent-setting votes on whether to allow gays to serve openly in the military. A House vote, which could come Thursday evening, would repeal the 1993 law known as "don't ask, don't tell" that has effectively required gays wishing to join the military to hide their sexual orientation. Troops leave Haiti

The bulk of U.S. military forces will depart Haiti, leaving United Nations forces and civilian groups to help the country rebuild its devastated capital in the wake of January's deadly earthquake. The departure, which was agreed upon by the U.S. and Haitian governments and long anticipated, signals that "we have reached a basic level of sustainment in Haiti," said State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley in an interview. "The military played an essential short-term role, but now this is getting back to where the focus is on development, and that expertise rests in the civilian sector." More


Gates praises outgoing Coast Guard commandant

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates praised outgoing Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad W. Allen for his close working relationship with the military, and said he looks forward to a similar relationship with Allen's successor, Adm. Robert J. Army reaches 1 million unmanned flight hours

The Army celebrated its recent attainment of 1 million hours of unmanned flight with an aircraft display and news conference at the Pentagon's courtyard. The milestone officially was reached April 14, with missions flown in the U.S. Central Command area of operations. "Today we celebrate a major milestone," Army Col. Gregory B. Gonzalez, project manager for unmanned aircraft systems at Redstone Arsenal, Ala., told reporters. "This is a tremendous accomplishment, but it's even more astounding when one considers how quickly the Army achieved this." More

U.S. Air Force tests hypersonic cruise missile

The U.S. Air Force on test launched a hypersonic cruise missile, with the vehicle accelerating to Mach 6, before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean, officials said. The Air Force said the test flight of the X-15A Waverider lasted more than 200 seconds, the longest ever hypersonic flight powered by scramjet propulsion. The previous record was 12 seconds in a NASA X-43 vehicle. More


National Guard (in Federal Status) and Reserve Activated as of May 25, 2010

This week the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps announced a decrease in activated reservists, while the Air Force announced an increase. The Coast Guard announced no change. The net collective result is 2,005 fewer reservists activated than last week. At any given time, services may activate some units and individuals while deactivating others, making it possible for these figures to either increase or decrease. More
