Army slashing 8,700 jobs as budget cuts begin

With deeper budget cuts looming, the Pentagon is starting to cut back by trimming the Defense Department's civilian workforce. The Army said recently it is moving forward with plans announced in July to cut about 8,700 positions, using a mix of early retirement offers, buyouts and attrition to trim the jobs by the end of the fiscal year in late September. The Air National Guard fell 24 percent short of its recruiting goals during the first month of fiscal 2012, making it one of only two components in all branches of the armed forces to miss the mark, according to the Pentagon. The Air National Guard had a goal of 639 accessions but recruited 484. The only other military component to miss its goal was the Army National Guard, by about 4 percent. More

The Pentagon is urging Congress not to create a mental health program for National Guard soldiers that backers argue is necessary at a time when suicides among them are at record levels."I was really surprised that the Department of Defense decided to oppose this," said Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., chairwoman of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee. "It's just a no-brainer to make sure that this is out there for every Guard and Reserve member wherever they live." More

Obama to slash National Guard force on US, Mexico border

Blaming budget cuts, the Obama administration early next year will cut the number of National Guard troops patrolling the U.S.-Mexico border by at least half, according to a Congressman Duncan Hunter, R-Calif. The Representative said the pending cuts are another reason Congress and President Obama should revisit the automatic defense spending reductions that kicked in with the failure last month of the deficit super-committee to reach a broader spending deal. Their service data can be uploaded to job search and networking sites to help identify employment opportunities. Officials announce absentee voting guidelines

The Federal Voting Assistance Program and the Military Postal Service Agency recently announced absentee ballot mailing date guidelines that apply to various overseas locations. Military members serving overseas and other U.S. citizens living abroad must consider mail transit times when submitting their absentee ballots to vote in upcoming presidential, Senate, House, gubernatorial, state legislature, local and other elections. The 2012 U.S. presidential election, for example, will be held Nov. 6, 2012. More

National Guard (in federal status) and Reserve activated as of Dec. 6

This week the Coast Guard announced an increase in activated reservists, while the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force announced a decrease. The net collective result is 497 fewer reservists activated than last week. At any given time, services may activate some units and individuals while deactivating others, making it possible for these figures to either increase or decrease. More
