3 airlines that will still fly you on a competitor

Prior to 1978, in the event of a delay or flight cancellation, all U.S. airlines were required to offer transportation on a competitor's next flight out if that flight would get the passenger to their destination sooner. Airlines were even required to put economy-class passengers in first class if only first class was available. Most airlines, because they're no longer required to have one, have eliminated this rule from their contracts. But three carriers, surprisingly, still have one.

Exhibitor academy maximizes tradeshow experience

To help exhibitors have a more successful and stress-free experience at its annual tradeshow in January, the National Shooting Sports Foundation recently hosted the SHOT Show Exhibitor Academy. The two-and-a-half-day program, which took place June 24-26, was free for the slightly more than 100 attendees and offered educational sessions focused on increasing exhibitors' return on investment, targeting buyers and boosting brand awareness.

$15,000 awards being offered to designers of faster queues for TSA lines

In anticipation that more fliers will be eager to pay for expedited checkpoint screening, the Transportation Security Administration has promised to award $15,000 in cash prizes to whoever can design a faster waiting line system. TSA opened a competition on InnoCentive, a website for crowdsourcing solutions to problems, which enables individuals and teams to submit proposals.

US-generated business travel spending to rise by 6.8 percent in 2014

United States-generated business-travel spending is expected to rise by 6.8 percent this year, to $292.3 billion, according to the Global Business Travel Association. In the newly released "GBTA BTI Outlook–United States 2014 Q2," the association reports that business travel grew by 3 percent in the first quarter of the year, and companies spent $71.2 billion on travel — a 7.6 percent increase over the first quarter of last year.

Transformation of Washington's 'Grand Lady' underway

The bells of the Old Post Office tower tolled July 23 as the Trump Organization broke ground on a two-year-long project to transform the Washington, D.C., landmark into one of the area's premiere hotels. GSA is leasing the excess federal property to the Trump Organization so that it can be reborn and bring millions of dollars of economic value to the District and the American taxpayer.

New certification developed for healthy travel destinations

As the market for healthy travel options for business and leisure segments continues to expand, a new nonprofit called the Institute for Healthy Destination Accreditation has emerged in Washington, D.C., to help resorts and hotels measure and improve health-related initiatives, amenities, facilities and personnel. IHDA has also launched a website to offer hotel health and wellness statistics and information for consumers.
