Active members were sent an email on October 29 containing a ballot for the Sigma Xi elections. Voting is open through 11:59 p.m. Eastern on November 27. Voters will select the member who will become the next president-elect, putting that person in line to become Sigma Xi president. Members will also vote for the open positions for regional and constituency directors, associate directors, and members on the Committee on Nominations that are assigned to their chapter's region and constituency. Members who are not affiliated with a chapter will vote for open positions in the Membership-at-Large Constituency.

Sigma Xi members, science supporters, and students came together October 25–28 for the 2018 Sigma Xi Annual Meeting and Student Research Conference. The meeting included sessions on big data and the future of research, ethics, professional development, and science communication.

Science and engineering students from across the country gathered in Burlingame, California, for the 18th Annual Student Research Conference. Many of the students competed in a research poster presentation competition. Sigma Xi members served as judges to recognize the top presenters.

Member Parimal (Perry) Chowdhury, a member of the Central Arkansas Sigma Xi Chapter and a professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, was given a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for the Prevention of Tobacco Induced Diseases earlier this month during the society's annual conference in Turkey. Chowdhury studies the mechanisms of disease processes, such as smoking related to pancreatic diseases. He is a past president of the society and is an associate editor of its journal, Tobacco Induced Diseases.

Geraldine (Geri) Richmond, Sigma Xi president-elect and the Presidential Chair in Science and professor of chemistry at the University of Oregon, will receive the Linus Pauling Medal on November 17 at the University of Washington Bothell. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in chemistry and is presented by the Portland, Puget Sound, and Oregon Sections of the American Chemical Society.

The Alamo Chapter will hold their fall meeting on November 8 that will include dinner and a lecture by Heather Hill, professor of psychology at St. Mary's University, on beluga whales. The Swarthmore College Chapter will host a dinner, lecture, and induction ceremony for new members on November 15. Their event will include a lecture by Derek Briggs, a professor of geology and geophysics and curator of invertebrate paleontology at the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University. Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis biologists are growing "mini retinas" in the lab from stem cells to mimic the growth of the human retina. The researchers hope to use the research to restore sight when critical connections between the eye and the brain are damaged. These models also allow the researchers to better understand how cells in the retina develop and are organized. These results are published online in Scientific Reports.

Heliconius butterflies are a diverse and colorful group of species that live throughout tropical regions of Central and South America. Many of them have wing patterns and colors that mimic other species to protect themselves from predators, and new research by scientists from the University of Chicago shows that in one species, Heliconius cydno, just one gene controls whether the butterfly has white or yellow spots on its wings.
