Pew survey: Facebook dominates in rush to social networking

The surge into social networks is gaining pace among Americans, with Facebook dominating but with many people using multiple platforms, a study shows. A Pew Research Center survey found 73 per cent of Americans over age 18 on the Internet use at least one social network — or about 63 per cent of the total adult population. Facebook is the preferred network, used by 71 per cent of online adults, or 57 per cent of all American adults, according to Pew researchers.

1,000 new domain suffixes set to expand the internet

After more than eight years of petitioning, the non-profit group Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has finally won its battle to expand the web's offering of generic top-level domain (gTLD) names. If all goes as planned, the new suffixes will begin rolling out by the end of January 2014.

Netflix accounts for 5-10 per cent of UPC internet traffic

Netflix already accounts for five-10 per cent of network traffic at cable operator UPC Netherlands, according to a survey of ISPs by local news website Tweakers. Netflix does not disclose its own traffic figures, and other ISPs did not want to share figures. Earlier reports have suggested that Netflix accounts for as much as a third of internet traffic in the U.S. during peak viewing hours in the evening.
