GoDaddy acquires marketplace startup Elto to expand its services for web pros

Web hosting and web services provider GoDaddy is continuing to expand its resources for small business owners, following its recent IPO. The company has now closed on the acquisition Elto, a San Francisco-based startup which had been offering a marketplace that helped connect business owners and other non-technical people to web developers who could help them establish and improve their web presence.

Yahoo shuffles Tumblr, Web-video leadership

Yahoo chief Marissa Mayer is shuffling management again to bring new leadership to blogging site Tumblr and Web video, two areas where she has pushed for more growth. Adam Cahan, the executive who had overseen mobile products, will lead a new group focused on video, according to people who have reviewed a company-wide memo sent by Mayer recently.

Google finds partners to help it compete with Amazon

Google finds itself in an unusual position as a public cloud vendor. While its roots where in search, a sector in which it quickly became the dominant player, in the public cloud space it is fighting a battle for relevancy. Amazon Web Services is the undisputed leader in the pubic cloud space and Microsoft Azure is also doing well also. Google is something of a bit player in the space and very keen to change that.

Mozilla to also reject Chinese Internet body's certificates

Mozilla Corp, creator of the popular Firefox web browser, said on Thursday it would follow Google Inc and no longer recognise new certificates of trust issued by a Chinese Internet agency. Google's Chrome and Mozilla's Firefox are some of the world's most widely used browsers, and the moves could disrupt users accessing a broad range of Chinese web sites.

Facebook Messenger now has a web version

Facebook users have gotten used to chatting with connections on the mobile Messenger app. Now, Facebook has launched a new Messenger version for web browsers. This means users can now chat on the Web without being on the Facebook page. For now, this new Facebook Messenger Web version will not be replacing messaging on Facebook. This means you will still be able to send and receive messages on your Facebook page directly. Rather than replacing the Facebook chat, Messenger is a standalone app separate from the rest of the site.
