TAB asks stations to air flu prevention PSA
Flu season has hit Texas hard and early, sadly taking lives of many of our fellow Texans already — with a potential for even more deaths in the next several weeks. For that reason, TAB has agreed to distribute this PSA urging Texans to get a flu shot. The immunization is widely available and can save lives.

Texas Supreme Court reviews issue of online defamation
The Associated Press via ABC News
Justices of Texas Supreme Court are weighing questions about whether defamatory postings on the Internet, such as cyperbullying and hate speech, can be removed from a company's website if judge or jury find that specific comments are personally damaging. Currently, defamatory speech still has protections under the law.

TV license renewal webinar set for today — register now!
Attorney Gregg Skall of TAB Associate member law firm Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice will bring stations up to speed on this time consuming and mandatory FCC requirement for Texas TV stations. Texas TV license renewals are due in April, but the renewal process actually begins on Feb. 1 with pre-filing station announcements. This 90-minute webinar will provide the necessary steps and timetable for the 2014 Texas TV station FCC license renewals, as well as tips for completing the online renewal form.

Learning music copyright law from TV's 'The Good Wife'

Telemundo names KLTM-TV GM, SVP

The Telemundo Station Group division of the NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations announced two key leadership positions at its recently acquired KTLM Harlingen-Weslaco-Brownsville, Texas (DMA 86). Are the sports blackout rules doomed?

Looks like the clock is running out for the sports blackout rules. In a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, the FCC has proposed their elimination, although the NFL, MLB, NAB and a number of network TV affiliates appear poised to mount a late-game defensive surge to try to save them. The outlook for the rules, however, isn't brilliant.

Mako sells KATA-TV Dallas-Fort Worth

Lone Star Spectrum, an investor group that is headed up by Philip Hurley, has agreed to acquire KATA-FM, a low-power independent station in Mesquite, for $5.8 million. The seller is Mako Communications, with Amanda Mintz named as a principal.
