Congressional break is chance to talk Performance Tax
Oscar Rodriguez, TAB President
The two-week Congressional recess starting this weekend is a prime opportunity for radio broadcasters to address concerns about an anticipated push for a Performance Tax on radio stations by the international record labels. Members of Congress will be on Easter break from March 30 through April 10. With 16 out of 133, Texas to date has more cosponsors than any other state for the anti-Performance Tax resolution H. Con. Res. 17 advanced by Texas Reps. Mike Conaway, R-Midland, and Gene Green, D-Houston. The measure is a nonbinding resolution expressing opposition to any measure that would mandate radio stations pay hundreds of millions of dollars more in royalties.

TAB newsroom legislative priority bill clears committee, headed to Senate floor vote
Michael Schneider, TAB Vice President, Legislative & Regulatory Affairs
There is good news to report on one of the four TAB newsroom legislative priorities in the 84th Texas Legislature. A bill that would make public the records of a campus police department at a Texas private college or university, SB 308, by Sen. John Whitmire, D-Houston, is headed to the full Senate for a floor vote. The Senate Criminal Justice Committee voted 5-0 last week to approve a committee substitute of the bill. The substitute bill differs from the original filed bill by clarifying that the TPIA will apply "solely" to the law enforcement records of a private university or college's police department.
