Uniform retractions/corrections bill, anti-SLAPP jurisdiction bill advance to Senate

TAB's entire legislative package of newsroom and Open Government related bills has, for the most part, advanced from one chamber to the other, a major step in getting bills passed. HB 1759 by Rep. Todd Hunter, R-Corpus Christi, the TAB-endorsed uniform retractions and corrections bill, was approved by the House in a 145-0 vote on May 2. (TAB members only.)

Member approval of bylaws changes due today

At their meeting on April 4, TAB's Board of Directors voted to revise the association's bylaws. In accordance with Section 31 of the bylaws, members received official notice on April 8, with voting to close on May 8. A majority vote of the regular members is required to approve any changes. FEMA adds Premiere Networks as primary entry point for national EAS messages

Adding another redundancy to its system of distributing national emergency alerts, FEMA on May 3 announced Premiere Networks as the latest alternative for stations to monitor, though it does not replace the required monitoring assignments required under the State EAS Plan. "We count on the broadcasting industry to alert and warn the public," said FEMA assistant administrator Damon Penn.

The President has nominated Thomas Wheeler as the next FCC Chairman, to become effective after confirmation by the U.S. Senate. What does this mean for broadcasters? As we have said before, one never really knows what issues will drive a Chairman's agenda. For this Chair, some issues are clear — like dealing with the incentive auction to reclaim some TV spectrum for wireless use. Other issues are forced on the FCC — like dealing with the indecency issues still pending after Supreme Court remand. And some are issues that for one reason or another capture the interest or attention or concern of the FCC Chair.

NAB seeks thaw on license modification freeze
TV Technology
The National Association of Broadcasters formally has requested that the Federal Communications Commission lift its freeze of TV station modification applications. The NAB first ask that the freeze be lifted during an ex parte meeting with FCC staffers April 24. The group's Rick Kaplan penned an official request to FCC Media Bureau chief Bill Lake outlining the NAB's concerns with the freeze. "This freeze is not justified and is having unintended deleterious impacts on the broadcasting industry," Kaplan said in the letter dated May 6.

Hendryx selling two Alpine radio stations
Ray Hendryx, President/General Manager, KVLF-AM/KALP-FM Alpine
Ray Hendryx, president and GM of KVLF-AM and KALP-FM in Alpine, has announced plans to put both stations on the market. KVLF went on the air in 1947, and has been known as the "Voice of the Last Frontier" for the past 66 years. Ray's father, the late Gene Hendryx, was a part time announcer on KVLF when the station signed on, and bought controlling interest in the station a few years later.

Jaymie Kosina has joined the management team at Radio One in Texas and will serve as digital sales manager and GSM at KBXX-FM and KMJQ-FM. For the last four years, Kosina was GSM for Cox Media Group's KGLK-FM and KHPT-FM in Houston, and for three years prior to that promotion, she was the local sales manager for Cox's KKBQ-FM and KTHT-FM.
