RTDNA Study: Women, minorities making gains in newsroom employment
RTDNA
The latest RTDNA/Hofstra University Annual Survey finds the minority workforce in TV news, at 22.4%, the highest it's been in 13 years and the second highest level ever. The minority workforce in radio rose to the highest level since in the mid-1990s. In TV, women news directors rose to the highest percentage ever, and women in the workforce rose to the second-highest level ever. The picture for women in radio news was more mixed.

Van de Putte seeks five debates with Patrick in Lt. Governor's race

With a little over three months to go before Texas voters select their next lieutenant governor, Democrat Leticia Van de Putte challenged Republican Dan Patrick to five debates in September and October. Van de Putte, a state senator from San Antonio, proposed debates in her hometown, Dallas, Austin, Houston and the Rio Grande Valley.

FCC seeks input in TV ownership review

On Aug. 6, the FCC will be taking the initial comments on its Quadrennial Review of the multiple ownership rules — looking at what limitations should be placed on the ownership of broadcast stations by one individual or company. FCC fines several Texas TV stations over "kid vid" rule violations disclosed in 2014 license renewal

The FCC fined four Texas TV stations a combined $10,000 for "kid vid" rule violations disclosed by the stations in their 2014 FCC license renewals. NBC Telemundo Licensee LLC, licensee of KVDA-TV San Antonio, was fined $3,000 for "apparently willfully and repeatedly violated Section 73.3526 of the Rules by failing to publicize the existence and location of the Station's Children's Television Programming Reports."

U.S. Fifth Circuit Ct. rules government licensees may use revenue for speech in Texas case

A federal appeals court has ruled that charitable bingo operators can use proceeds from their games to lobby Texas lawmakers on a variety of issues, including gambling. The full 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed that a provision of the Texas Bingo Enabling Act, on the books for more than three decades, violated free speech rights of nonprofits that hold bingo licenses. The decision, released late Monday, upholds a lower court ruling.

Performance royalties: the state of play

There is much afoot these days in the world of copyrights and performance rights and royalties. Any radio station owner knows about the license fees collected by ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC, which pay royalties to composers and publishers. Less familiar are royalties collected by performers and the recording industry. For musical recordings, radio stations pay SoundExchange when streaming music over the Internet, but not for over-the-air broadcasts.

Planned Eldorado FM station fined $10,000 for premature construction

The FCC fined Saver Media, Inc, licensee of KQTC-FM Eldorado, $10,000 for "apparently willfully and repeatedly violated Section 319(a) of the Communications Act of 1934" by "prematurely constructing facilities" proposed in an CP Application. According to FCC documents, Tony Cuellar was the winning bidder for the Eldorado FM allotment in FM Auction 93. Cuellar timely filed a 2012 CP application for a construction permit for a new FM station at Eldorado.

Prissila Sánchez has joined KWEX 41, the Univision O&O in San Antonio as a weather anchor/videojournalist. In addition to doing the weather, she'll be reporting entertainment and lifestyle stories for for the 5 and 10 pm weekday newscasts. Prissila started her journalism career in Monterrey, Mexico, where she worked as a weather anchor for TV Azteca's morning newscast "Info7" for 4 years.
