2013 Open Government legislation already paying off
- El Paso-focused law, other measures take effect Sept. 1

The El Paso City Council has voted to release emails, letters and other documents that elected city leaders had fought to keep private in light of a new law about to take effect, which TAB helped rescue at the last minute in the waning days of the 2013 legislative session. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott had ruled the material public and the city sued to prevent its release. (TAB Members Only)

FCC sets Sept. 20 due date for annual regulatory fees

The FCC has set a Sept. 20 due date for broadcast entities' annual regulatory fees. Full payment of the FY 2013 annual regulatory fees must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. EDT on that date. The FCC's fee structure was set forth in an Aug. 12 report and order. Stations can look up their specific fees here. (TAB Members Only)

Race for Comptroller gets more crowded

Four Republicans are now vying for that party's nomination for state Comptroller that's up for grabs in the March primary election. After serving 24 years in the Texas House of Representatives, Rep. Harvey Hilderbran, R-Kerrville, announced his candidacy for the job last week. Hilderbran chairs the House Ways and Means Committee. (TAB Members Only)

Pitts and Rose present storytelling session at Sept. 21 Southwest Broadcast Newsroom Workshop
TAB's Southwest Broadcast Newsroom Workshop, co-sponsored by the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters, will feature network news veterans Byron Pitts of ABC News and Les Rose of CBS News with a special presentation on storytelling. The event takes place all day Sept. 21 in Dallas on the SMU campus. TAB has lined up nearly 40 presenters — from nationally known newsroom trainers to some of Texas' best newsroom professionals — doing a host of workshop sessions all day.

Update: OET releases the latest, greatest version of TVStudy

The newest version of TVStudy has been released — Version 1.2.7. TVStudy is the software that will be used in the modeling and analysis necessary to repack the TV spectrum. The new version allows studies of potential interference between U.S. stations and stations in Canada and Mexico. It also cleans up a couple of bugs that had apparently surfaced in the earlier version.

Viewers 'AIM' to watch on different screens

It seems that every day we read another story or report about how much television programming is being consumed on devices other than the television — computers, tablets, smartphones and virtually every other device with a screen. It's easy to think that this means people don't want or soon won't need their big-screen TV. All things being equal, most customers will choose to watch a program on the biggest, highest-quality screen available. However, for most viewers, "all things being equal" comes down to three primary factors: access, interface and money, or AIM.

MRC accredits eight more Arbitron markets

Arbitron says the Media Rating Council has accredited the Portable People Meter ratings service in eight additional markets: Cleveland, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Denver-Boulder, Detroit, Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood, Pittsburgh, Portland, Ore., and Nassau/Suffolk (Long Island). MRC Executive Director George Ivie said, "We congratulate Arbitron for the continued improvements of its quality metrics and on earning accreditation in eight additional markets."
