Whoa, there! Journalism's new code of ethics

The journalism profession is trying to reduce speeding on the information superhighway. The Society of Professional Journalists recently adopted a new code of ethics. The main difference between the revamped code and the one that had been in place since 1996 is that the new version addresses the alarming tendency to rush stuff onto the Web as soon as it's heard about, without taking the time to make sure it's true.

TAB funds distribution of Sept. 29 Lt. Gov. and Sept. 30 gubernatorial broadcast debates

The Texas Association of Broadcasters is funding the distribution of two broadcast debates involving candidates for two statewide offices later in September. TAB is funding the TV satellite distribution and the real-time Spanish translation of both debates. In addition, TAB is helping to arrange distribution of the debates to Texas radio stations via Content Depot, the Texas State Networks and an MP3 audio stream.

Texas court tosses out 'improper photography' law

New fast lane in Open Internet proceeding

In a blog post on the FCC's website, the Commission's Chief Information Officer advises that " ... in the Commission's embrace of Open Data and a commitment to openness and transparency throughout the Open Internet proceedings, the FCC is making available a Comma Separated Values file for bulk upload of comments given the exceptional public interest." If we're understanding that correctly, the Commission is offering an express lane for the simultaneous submission of multiple comments to get them in the door even faster than might otherwise be the case.

BMI reports record revenues of $977 million
MusicWeek
In a blog post on the FCC's website, the Commission's Chief BMI achieved the highest revenues and royalty distributions in its 75-year history for its fiscal year ended June 30. BMI generated record revenues of $977 million, and distributed and administered more than $840 million to its songwriters, composers and music publishers.

Pulitzer Prize winning journalist George Rodrigue hired as assistant news director at WFAA-TV
WFAA-TV has announced that George Rodrigue will join the station as assistant news director beginning Sept. 25. Rodrigue's distinguished career in journalism spans more than 35 years. As a three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, he has worked in a variety of roles in newsrooms and covering stories around the world, including the Persian Gulf War, the breakup of the Soviet Union and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
