With shutdown over, Congress set to focus on spending, tax reform
-At risk: tax deduction for advertising costs

Now that the federal government is open again, Congress is returning its focus to the budget stalemate that in part prompted the shutdown, including how or whether to fend off the next phase of across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration that are slated to hit every major federal program early next year. With everything from national defense to food stamps slated for further massive budget cuts, scores of interest groups are turning up the heat to persuade lawmakers to protect their part of the budget.

Announcements and departures in Republican statewide campaign for Agriculture Commissioner

Two former state representatives have joined the race for Texas Agriculture Commissioner and one current state representative is leaving the race to pursue a newly open Texas Senate seat. After several months of speculation, former state Rep. Tommy Merritt, R-Longview, and former state Rep. Sid Miller, R-Stephenville, are now running for Texas agriculture commissioner.

More Democrats announce campaigns for statewide office

Two more Democrats have announced runs for other statewide offices, joining state Sen. Wendy Davis and Houston businessman Mike Collier in their respective quests for governor and state comptroller. Houston attorney Sam Houston will run for the Democratic nomination for Attorney General. Others contemplating an A.G. run are current state Senators Carlos Uresti, D-San Antonio, and Jose Rodriguez, D-El Paso.

Another incumbent Republican congressman challenged in primary

A physician has emerged as a challenger to a Panhandle congressman, bringing to five the number of sitting Republican congressmen who are being challenged in the Republican primary by other right wing candidates. Last week, Dr. Donald May announced his candidacy for CD19, the U.S. House of Representatives district currently held by Rep. Randy Neugebauer, R-Lubbock.

Pay attention! FCC sets new filing deadlines following reopening

When it reopened for business after the 16-day government shutdown, about the first thing the FCC did was to announce on its website that all "Commission filing deadlines" that occurred during the shutdown or that would occur up to and including Oct. 22 — with a very limited exception — would be suspended until further notice. Approximately 12 hours later, that further notice has been provided in a public notice establishing new filing dates for documents whose deadlines were affected by the shutdown. Pay close attention.

Media Bureau extends low-power FM filing window
- Second LPFM webinar rescheduled for Oct. 24

Federal Communications Commission
The Media Bureau has announced that the deadline for filing Form 318 applications for new low-power FM stations will be extended to 6 p.m. EST on Nov. 14 from the original Oct. 29 deadline. Additionally, the Bureau has rescheduled the second LPFM webinar for Oct. 24. The LPFM window currently is open and completed Form 318 applications may now be submitted.

Reporters Committee launches iFOIA electronic information request filing and tracking system
Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press
The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press at the Online News Association conference in Atlanta launches iFOIA, a free, online system for creating, sending and tracking federal and state freedom of information requests. The iFOIA resource, which is online at www.ifoia.org, is an extension of the Reporters Committee's popular FOIA Letter Generator, which has been a feature of the organization's website since 1996. iFOIA can be used on a desktop or mobile device and allows users to choose whether to keep their correspondence chains with government agencies confidential or share them with designated colleagues, such as editors and lawyers.
