TAB urges FCC to end cable override of EAS messages
Oscar Rodriguez, TAB President
The FCC should take immediate measures to prohibit cable operators from blocking their subscribers' access to local TV broadcasters' emergency warnings, TAB urged in comments filed with the agency in its ongoing review of the first nationwide EAS test. "This ongoing, irresponsible practice by cable systems endangers lives of citizens and first responders alike, and it's imperative that regulators compel them to cease if common sense does not," said TAB President Oscar Rodriguez.

Weslaco leaders say anonymous threat preceded public ouster from meeting
The Monitor
Weslaco city leaders said an anonymous threat made to the police department was what led them to oust the entirety of the public from a recent public meeting. City Manager Leo Olivares said Police Chief Michael Kelley had notified him shortly before the city commission meeting began at 5:30 p.m. that someone had called the department earlier in the afternoon saying there needed to be extra security at the meeting because there might be violence. Followers of Weslaco politics knew it would be a controversial evening.

ComLawBlog
The magic number is 2,799 is — at least according to Dave Doherty at Skywaves Consulting. That would be Doherty's calculation of the number of LPFM applications filed during the just-closed window period. So, if you had 2,799 in your office pool, you should be a happy camper — if, that is, Doherty's calculation holds up.

Why 4K? The latest TV tech flop?
By Mitch Weinraub
As the "soft" announcements continue to roll out that a number of players (DirecTV, Netflix, etc.) are planning to launch 4K TV services, it probably makes sense to take a step back and ask both why and when? Of course, planning could mean anything from "we've penciled it for 2017" to "we will have a channel launched before the end of the year." That aside, why would anyone be in a rush to ready a 4K TV service? If we let history serve as our guide, we have two recent technology rollouts that may be able to help us understand the trajectory for 4K.
