For the first time, as part of Walmart's 5th Annual Sustainable Packaging Expo in Bentonville, Ark., in April, a packaging scorecard audit was held. 47 products were purchased at Walmart Store #1 in Rogers, Arkansas, and evaluated. The evaluation team was built from Walmart's Packaging Sustainable Value Network (SVN) Leadership Team and members of the Packaging Scorecard Support Team (PSST). Linpac Packaging has launched a new range of degradable polythene-based cling film -- OxoLin -- which it claims will help allay consumer and retailer concerns about packaging waste. Oxolin is aimed at food packaging applications and has a shelf-life of over 12 months. Natural additives break down the film within a four year period, reducing the amount of waste going to landfill, says Linpac. More

Alfreton, U.K.-based plastic container manufacturer George Utz has invested £150,000 in extra storage on site for raw materials, as a cushion against high and fluctuating resin prices. The company has installed four silos supplied by Braby of Bristol at its Clover Nook Industrial Estate factory. They measure 4.5 meters in diameter by 20 meters high. The 800 ton additional capacity increases George Utz's raw material storage by 130 percent. According to a recently released report by The Freedonia Group, demand for foodservice packaging in the U.S. is forecast to climb 2.3 percent per year to nearly $8 billion in 2014. Rising disposable income -- a benefit of the recovering economy -- will drive this growth, as will expanding foodservice revenues as consumers continue to favor convenient, ready-to-eat foods over meals prepared at home. U.S. food giant ConAgra has plumped for plastics in a very public spat -- switching to plastic pallets manufactured iGPS from wooden alternatives from Australia-based Brambles. The news comes after a pallet war was played out in the media by Brambles and iGPS. Brambles had claimed that the fire retardant used in plastic pallets -- deca-bromine -- causes cancer, while iGPS said wooden pallets carried food poisoning bacteria. More

Toorank is reducing its carbon footprint by using recyclable pouches for its Petrov Vodka. The new Eco Refill pack holds 35cl of liquid and has a spout that twists open and can be re-sealed for later use. It uses up to 90% less packaging waste than glass bottles, according to Christopher Lake, director of UK sales, and its carbon footprint is up to 80% less than that of glass bottles. More
