Polymer Group has signed an agreement to acquire a controlling interest in Companhia Providencia Industria e Comercio, a Brazilian manufacturer of nonwovens used in hygiene, healthcare and industrial applications. This acquisition is said to further accelerate PGI's global growth strategy by extending its presence into Brazil, an attractive and high-growth region, and enhancing its capabilities in North America.

US manufacturing growth slows to 3-month low

Markit's purchasing manager's index for U.S. manufacturing showed slowing growth, with a reading of 53.7. That's down from 55 in December. It's a three-month low. New export orders contracted, meaning the sub-index slipped below 50.

Japanese mobile company reveals smart clothing in healthcare push

Japan’s dominant mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo is pushing into wearable technology with new smart clothing and a wrist band that can monitor wearers' health while sending data to smartphones and the cloud. Developed by DoCoMo parent NTT, in collaboration with chemical company Toray Industries, Hitoe is a nanofiber-laced line of clothing that uses conductive fibers to measure heart rate.

Cotton topsheet developed for diapers

The world is one step closer to seeing a diaper with a cotton component. Cotton maker TJ Beall and Huntsman Textile Effects have developed a diaper topsheet made from hydroentangled apertured spunlaced nonwoven material. The substrate, featuring TJ Beall's True Cotton brand of unbleached (griege) cotton treated with Huntsman's Ultraphil CO additive, outperformed polypropylene spunbond nonwovens.

Ahlstrom to cut more jobs
Nonwovens Industry
Ahlstrom plans to cut more jobs to be able to expand its rightsizing program, the company said. Most will occur by the end of 2014, and the full impact of the program is expected to be visible in 2015. As a result of the planned program, Ahlstrom's personnel is estimated to be reduced by approximately 400 people globally at the maximum, instead of the earlier estimate of 350.
