US manufacturing growth accelerates in April

U.S. manufacturing growth accelerated for a third straight month in April, an industry report showed recently, boosted by a pickup in employment growth. The Institute for Supply Management said its index of national factory activity rose to 54.9 in April, up from 53.7 in March. It was the best reading since December.

Energizer to split into 2 companies

Energizer Holdings Inc. has authorized its management to pursue a plan to separate the company's Household Products and Personal Care divisions into two independent, publicly traded companies. The separation is planned as a tax-free spin-off to the company's shareholders and is expected to be completed in the second half of the 2015 fiscal year.

European nonwovens production up 2 percent year-on-year in 2013

European nonwovens production totaled a year-on-year rise of 1.9 percent in 2013, according to the latest figures released by EDANA. Growth levels picked up slightly over 2012, when output rose by 1.5 percent year-on-year. These figures, EDANA said, are relatively low, adding that the average growth rate since 2009 has been close to 5.2 percent.

Indian textile company to relocate operations in US, invest $40 million

An India-based textile company has announced it will invest $40 million in North Carolina for relocation of its operations, which would create as many as 84 new jobs in the next two years. North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory recently announced that Shri Govindaraja Textiles, which is a part of the Jayavilas Group in Aruppukottai, Tamil Nadu, will be locating its textile operations in North Carolina's Rockingham County.

Bonar builds a new manufacturing facility in China

Nonwovens can make a big difference to the amount of food produced when growing crops and also in preventing spoilage once a crop has been harvested, according to EDANA. For example, the association says, when growing strawberries, a farmer only has to save 2 percent of the value of their crop to make using nonwoven covers worthwhile.

US production costs catching up with China

Another win for the made-in-America movement: A new report found that U.S. manufacturing in the past decade has become much more competitive compared with low-cost manufacturing rivals. U.S. factories can make goods at the same cost or even cheaper than those made in Eastern Europe, according to a Boston Consulting Group report. And it is now less than 5 percent cheaper to make goods in China compared with the U.S.
