News that India's technical textile industry is set to be growing rapidly in the next few years comes as the Techtextil India trade fair welcomes more than 182 exhibitors from Austria, India, Turkey, Sweden, Switzerland, Czech Republic, U.K., Netherlands, U.S. and other countries. The industry is expected to grow at a rate of 20 percent annually to reach $36 billion by 2016-17.

Nonwovens help in cultivation of seaweed for biomaterials

Seaweed harvesting in Europe's first trials of seaweed cultivation in the open ocean using advanced textiles was completed earlier this year. The cutting-edge textiles have been developed specifically for large-scale cultivation of seaweed for biomaterials and biofuels in coastal seas. Devised as part of a three-year European project called AT-SEA, the textiles have been subjected to simultaneous trials in inshore waters off the coasts of Norway, Scotland and Ireland.

Nonwoven maker Jacob Holm to expand in North Carolina

Governor Pat McCrory and North Carolina Commerce Secretary Sharon Decker announced that Jacob Holm Industries, a global nonwoven manufacturing company, will expand its operations in the state's Buncombe County. The company plans to create 66 new jobs with a minimum qualifying investment of more than $45.9 million. The total capital investment is likely to exceed $60 million when the final project is complete.

US manufacturing activity highest since 2011

The U.S. manufacturing sector expanded last month at its fastest pace in almost 2-1/2 years, an industry report showed recently. The Institute for Supply Management said its index of national factory activity rose to 56.2 in September from 55.7 in August, marking its highest level since April 2011. The report showed that firms added the most workers in 15 months during September.

Nonwovens carding machinery specialist DiloSpinnbau has upgraded its 6,600 square-meter manufacturing facility in Bremen, Germany, to the Digital Lumens Intelligent Lighting System, saving 91 percent of its lighting energy costs annually. By replacing its T8 fluorescent fixtures, the company gained a highly controllable and efficient LED lighting solution that significantly improved lighting quality and illumination levels.
