Improving the sustainability of disposable diapers has been a concern for Swedish global hygiene and forest company, SCA, and Europe's largest market pulp producer, Södra, for some time. In 2008, together with Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, they launched WooDi, an R&D project to produce commercially viable alternatives to the oil-based materials used in disposable diapers, based on cellulose as a renewable resource. Through the advice of Cary Street Partners, LLC, the management team partnered with Charlotte, N.C., based private equity firms Capital South Partners and Crutchfield Capital combined with Source Capital Mezzanine Fund and PNC bank to complete the transaction Aug. 31, 2012. Buckeye Technologies Inc. has released its 2012 Sustainability Report. The report highlights Buckeye's efforts to reduce fossil fuel usage, water usage, solid waste production, and air emissions during 2011. Buckeye said it reduced greenhouse gas emissions, which are generated by fossil fuels, and purchased electricity by over 10 percent per ton since 2007, and now generates 77 percent of its total energy needs from renewable biomass.
