Global nonwovens market poised for growth

Reportlinker.com has published a new market research report titled "World Nonwovens Market," which says global demand is set to rise 5.3 percent annually to 9 million metric tons in 2017. However, there is a great deal of variation among different regions and countries. Countries with well-developed manufacturing sectors and a population with relatively high personal incomes, such as the U.S., Japan, and Western European countries, have well established nonwovens markets.

Manufacturing unexpectedly accelerated in November at the fastest pace in more than two years, pointing to a pickup in business spending that will help propel the U.S. economy in early 2014. The Institute for Supply Management's index increased to 57.3, the highest since April 2011, from 56.4 a month earlier, the Tempe, Ariz.-based group's report showed.

Lear Corp. to open automotive seating plant in Romania

Ford makes a car lined with Coke-bottle material

Making a car more environmentally friendly doesn't just mean hybrid engines or better gas mileage. A new partnership between Ford and Coca-Cola applies it to a car's interior too. The Ford Fusion Energi, a hybrid vehicle currently in development by the car company, uses the same material to line the car's insides as Coke uses to make its plastic bottles.

BASF producing bio-based BDO
Sustainable Nonwovens
BASF has produced its first commercial volumes of 1,4-butanediol from renewable raw material, and is offering it to customers for testing and commercial use. Among other uses, bio-based BDO could be used to make new stretch elastics for nonwoven-based aborbent disposables, which at 6 percent of the value of these items, are projected to be a $3 billion market in themselves by 2017.
