Throughout my 30-year career in higher education, I've had my share of interviews. I've also witnessed open fora in which others were interviewed, and colleagues have shared with me their interview stories. Job candidates are given a surfeit of advice for how to be their best during an interview. But what about interviewers?

College to help government school teachers learn English

India:The Government Mahindra College has decided to train the district's government school teachers in speaking and writing in English, weeks after the latter angered education minister Daljit Singh Cheema by failing to converse in the language. The college management said they will be organizing a 40-day English language course for the teachers.

US government pilots pipeline for international high schoolers

The EducationUSA Academy, operated by the U.S. Department of State, this month has welcomed international students to the U.S., from Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru in a bid to attract students at a younger age to the U.S. education system. The high school students, aged between 15 and 17, will participate in a four-week long intensive English and college preparation program.

Beginning undergraduate work at a community college is a gateway toward a bachelor's degree that many international — and U.S. — students pursue for many great reasons. I had initially moved to the U.S. to advance my career in ballet. I ​decided to enroll at Miami Dade College, a community college, in order to extricate myself from my nonacademic background and live the life of books, caffeine and countless research papers. Miami Dade offered the flexibility I needed for a smooth and enjoyable transition from the world of ballet to the world of politics. However, there are some quirks about community college​ that may grow into pitfalls at the end of your community college years.

Employment main motivation behind English language learning

Employment acts as the main driver to learn English in Latin America, new research by the British Council has shown. The "English in Latin America" research revealed that for non-English speakers in all seven of the countries surveyed (Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Argentina), improved employment prospects were recognized as the main motivation to learn English. On average, 75 percent of respondents recognized this as the main reason that they would be encouraged to learn the language

Ministry focuses on placing trained English teachers in rural schools

Malaysia: The education ministry continuously focuses on placing trained and expert English teachers at rural schools to improve and strengthen student learning skills. Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan said the move was to support implementation of a compulsory pass in English at the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia level next year. He said sending trained and expert English teachers to rural schools — among the programs under the National Education Blueprint — was an ongoing process to ensure teachers were given enough training to strengthen the language.

Latest language tech innovations come from synergies among entrepreneurs, academics and Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh seems to have become a center for automated language learning with such companies as Duolingo, Carnegie Speech, Safaba Translation Solutions, and WeSpeke headquartered there. In all, twelve language-based businesses have been identified as being started in the Pittsburgh area. The probable cause? Professor Jaime Carbonell founded the Language Technologies Institute at Carnegie Mellon University in 1996. The LTI does research on speech recognition and speech synthesis, machine translation, computational linguistics, search engines, text mining, and language tutoring systems.

Literacy groups help students turn page toward better life
Navigating through everyday life involves innumerable small tasks that many take for granted. Signing forms, filling out bank deposit slips, reading information about one’s health care or sharing a bedtime story with a child are just a few examples of the kinds of activities to which most people don’t give a second thought. For 30 million adults throughout the country, however, those tasks are insurmountable. According to the nonprofit Literacy New Jersey, that’s how many individuals lack basic prose literacy skills. In New Jersey alone, 17 percent of the adult population lacks such skills, the organization states.
