McQueen leaves Lampasas for Hardin-Simmons Austin American-Statesman Share
Lampasas football coach Joey McQueen, who took over a winless team and turned it into a playoff qualifier, has been hired as the new wide receivers coach at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. McQueen, 53, told the Badgers he was stepping down after three seasons. He led Lampasas to a 19-14 record and twice took the Badgers to the playoffs. The DeSoto ISD school board tabled action on Claude Mathis' return as head football coach until the next school board meeting Feb. 27. Mathis left DeSoto last month to take an assistant coaching job with the University of Houston. Non-Valley coaches make up 20 of the 32 applicants vying to replace former coach Fred Sanchez.
