Fort Worth Star-Telegram    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It took 32 minutes of basketball for Mansfield Timberview to ease a year of heartache. The Wolves (37-2) put a 50-27 loss to Waco Midway in last year's championship game behind them by defeating Frisco Wakeland 55-39 to win the Class 4A state title. More

Fans come in droves for 'game of the year'
The Galveston County Daily News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The lines stretched one-half mile around the Merrell Center and went four deep at the ticket booth as people elbowed and pushed their way for one of the highly coveted 5,600 seats. The scene resembled a rock concert mosh pit more than a high school playoff basketball game. People from all across Galveston County and the greater Houston area came out to see the Region III-4A Final, the so-called game of the year, the one everyone’s been talking about: No. 3 in the state La Marque against No. 1 in the state and nation Houston Yates. And they came in droves. More than the Merrell Center could hold. More than the arena could handle. More

While Wagner players posed for photos after receiving the Region IV-5A championship trophy Saturday, guard Jordan Clarkson already had walked away. The Thunderbirds' repeat regional title was nice, but there's something else on Clarkson's mind: topping last season's state-semifinal appearance. More

The Colony's preparation won't change for high-scoring Houston Yates
The Dallas Morning News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Early in the afternoon this past Saturday, The Colony boys basketball team began receiving congratulations for making it to state. Early in the afternoon Sunday, they began receiving condolences. You have to play Houston Yates? Good luck with that. Yes, Yates is really, really good. The defending Class 4A state champions are at the top of two national polls, have a 56-game winning streak and have tied a national record by scoring at least 100 points in their last 14 games. This weekend's state tournament at the Frank Erwin Center is expected to be a crowning moment for Yates and a crushing moment for anyone in its path. More

Jay star Ross still living the dream
San Antonio Express-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Every now and then after practice, Chris Ross and his teammates will start taking half-court shots just for kicks. Ross will go to that spot on the court that made him an instant legend eight years ago. The spot where his double-clutch, 50-foot buzzer-beater gave Jay the 2002 Class 5A state championship. Except his court these days is far from the Erwin Center in Austin. When the Jay girls basketball team clinched a state tournament berth last week, Ross was celebrating from his apartment in Manila, Philippines. More

Trivia question for all high school basketball connoisseurs: Which area program features a starting five that has won a regional championship, a prestigious holiday tournament and a major AAU tournament within an eight-month span? Guess Lancaster, and you're correct. The senior quintet of John Bohannon, Tre Lynch, J.J. Williams, Michale Kyser and Sheldon Earl can boast that it started the Class 4A Region II championship in Garland, as well as the Dallas ISD Coca-Cola Tournament over the Christmas break. The five played AAU ball with Dallas Showtyme and won the 300-plus-team Denton Great American Shoot-Out back in July. Those five now will try to add a state title to their championship résumé. After defeating Pinkston on Saturday, Lancaster earned the No. 2 seed in this weekend's UIL state tournament and will face Region IV champ Lake Travis. More
