America's interest in firearms keeps growing
Gun Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Does this sound familiar? The March 2012 National Shooting Sports Foundation's adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System figure of 1,189,152 was an increase of 20.0 percent over the NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 990,840 in March 2011. You should have heard or read something similar before, considering that this newest NICS update represented the 22nd straight month that NSSF-adjusted NICS figures have increased. More

Making a hash of the Second Amendment
National Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Harvard historian Jill Lepore has a piece attacking gun rights in the latest New Yorker, and a follow-up post on the magazine's website. Most of it is basically what you'd expect: some numbers about gun violence, some horrifying anecdotes about people who've misused guns, some reporting from a gun range, some artsy writing ("a gun is a machine made to fire a missile that can bore through flesh"), and an overarching history of the gun-rights movement. Michael McPhail of Darlington, Wis., earned the USA's second medal of the International Shooting Sports Federation "London Prepares" World Cup and in the process established himself as a top contender for Olympic selection. Competing in the Men's 50-meter Rifle Prone event, McPhail and U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit teammate Eric Uptagrafft earned spots in the finals. Scoring a second-highest finals round of 104.6 points, McPhail would capture a bronze medal. More

FINALLY, a gun lubricant exists that can withstand the most extreme conditions.
After using Safari Charlie Gun Lube Plus, Floro Lavalle with Sierra Outfitters in Argentina reported cleanings were much easier, they were needed less frequently and field jamming went down to almost non-existent. While these statements may seem generic and boring, consider that they shoot on average 2000-5000 rounds per day per gun, OVER 1 MILLION ROUNDS PER YEAR, and pair that with Lavalle’s full season of using Safari Charlie Gun Lube Plus. His report was an 83% reduction in repair/replacement costs. MORE...

Texas' 'Castle Doctrine' law protects our citizens
San Antonio Express-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From State Sen. Jeff Wentworth: Since the shooting death of teenager Trayvon Martin in Florida, gun laws have been the subject of heated national debate. Texas has a "Castle Doctrine" law, Senate Bill 378, which I wrote and the Texas Legislature passed in 2007. Twenty-seven of my fellow Texas state senators signed on as co-authors of the bill. The "Castle Doctrine" comes from the common law principle that people's homes are their castles, and they have the right to defend themselves from criminal intruders. More

Gun rights are fundamental
Ammoland    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From Chris W. Cox: As a seventh generation Tennessean, Tennessee property owner and graduate of Rhodes College in Memphis, the legislative battle over keeping locked firearms in vehicles on company property hits home with me. So I was particularly disappointed to read journalism professor Otis L. Sanford's anti-Second Amendment rant on this topic. More

Sound suppressors 101
American Rifleman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
One of the trends evident in the 2012 market is an increase in the number of gun companies introducing suppressor-ready firearms or offering threaded barrels for installation in existing models. Although sound suppressors have been around since 1905, they remain a widely misunderstood and misrepresented shooting accessory. Since the industry is feeling suppressed this year, it seems like the right time to take a look into what sound suppressors are all about. More

High-priority habitats for waterfowl
Ducks Unlimited    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Waterfowl managers in North America must ensure that more than 40 species of ducks, geese and swans find landscapes with sufficient habitat to sustain them throughout the year. The diversity of species and habitats, the great number of birds and the continental scale involved make this a daunting conservation challenge. Ducks Unlimited and its partners have identified and prioritized the landscapes that are most important to continental waterfowl populations. More
