Straus: Texas House will find way to fund water projects

The morning after a major bill to authorize spending billions of dollars on state water projects faltered in the Texas House, Speaker Joe Straus' office released a statement saying he wouldn't "let a technicality seal the debate on water." Straus "remains committed to working with appropriators, members of the House and stakeholders to ensure funding for the state water plan this session," the statement said.

Economy: Consumer confidence jumps as US home values rebound
Consumer confidence unexpectedly jumped in April, and the rebound in home values accelerated earlier this year, showing the recovery in residential real estate is buttressing the U.S. economy. The Conference Board's sentiment index climbed to 68.1, exceeding the highest estimate in a Bloomberg survey of economists, data from the New York-based private research group showed.

FAA suspends furloughs — typo or not
A typo kept President Barack Obama from signing legislation designed to end budget-related FAA air traffic controller furloughs blamed for widespread flight delays, a congressional source told CNN. But the fix is going into effect anyway, and the system will be back to normal by Sunday, the FAA said.

Anthony Foxx named as transportation secretary

Calling him possibly the best transportation secretary in history, President Barack Obama bid goodbye to Ray LaHood and nominated Charlotte, N.C., Mayor Anthony Foxx to take his place. Foxx, a Democrat, replaces a Republican in the White House, but in his brief speech in the East Room of the White House he made an appeal for bipartisanship. "We must work together to enhance this nation's infrastructure," he said.

The hotel minibar, the last refuge of many a tired, emotional business traveler, is supposedly in its twilight years. Though minibar prices always have been high, hotel companies maintain that the fridges are actually a loss leader. They require a lot of labor to keep full, and theft is a constant problem; some customers steal alcohol and replace it with water to try to fool whoever is checking. So now chains such as Marriott and Hilton are scrapping them, and Hyatt already has done so in many of its properties.
